Having recently bought a 930 turbo and pretty much sorted it out, I unexpectedly find myself in a position where I could upgrade. Now the question is do I stick with the 930 or should I upgrade to something different for about 30-35k. The car is purely a weekend toy and I do fancy staying with 2 wheel drive because I will only take it out when the sun shines so traction shouldn't be an issue. Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

If I'd had the money when I bought mine, I'd have had a 930.

As it goes, I'm going to stick with mine if I can. I don't know about you, but I'm really reluctant to move on, even though I probably could now.

I find myself asking, "How much of my salary to I want to tie into my car?" I personaly think that a really nice example of an older car has more class. THE Merc is a really good example of this.

You have more of an icon than I. If I were in your shoes I'd be more than happy to hang on to it.

On the other hand if you want another car to use as a hack, your choices might be different.

I'm sure that plenty will disagree.

You haven't had it very long Steve - you can't already be bored of it?!?!?

If you're now addicted to the turbo experience, but want to stay 2WD, then you could consider the 964 turbo, preferably a 3.6 ltr. That would be well within the budget. Without the turbo, you could be looking at 2WD 993s or 996s?

I have a 993 turbo, and my one temptation for an upgrade would also be 2WD - a 993 GT2. Haven't looked at the prices but suspect that they would put me off the idea fairly sharpish!

Maybe you should keep the 930 a bit longer and find another way to play with your money?

I went from a 1989 930 to a 2000 GT3 2 years ago it was quite a big step money wise but if I had mid 30's to spend it would have to be a 964RS you can't get a purer 911 driving experience.

I'm not bored with the car and to be honest I haven't given it much of a chance yet. I suppose what I should be asking is there that much difference in handling on the newer cars. I would like to stay with a Turbo but being a little clueless with the marque I'm not really that sure what I want.I like the idea of driving around in what is fast becoming a classic but at the same time I like to have the best I can comfortably afford.

Being sensible now I've spent quite a lot of money getting my 930 sorted,I should keep it for the summer. But to quote my wife when it comes to cars I'm a bit of a pratt.

Supposedly when Porsche developed the 964 they made big upgrades to the suspension and claimed that handling was much better than previous versions. Despite that, Paul Frere, who seems to have driven every model of Porsche under the sun, commented that he didn't consider the handling to have changed much from previous models.

However, there was a step change when they made the 993, squeezing in the improved rear suspension layout developed in the 928 (I think!) - except (in my experience) the suspension alignment on a 993 turbo is sensitive and easily knocked out of kilter.

Re. prataciousness, my wife is always amazed that I can be tight (her words, I prefer "wise money user"!) about so many aspects of life, yet spend wads unflinchingly on a four wheeled lump of metal. I try and explain that it's because I don't buy shoes, clothes and handbags every week, but she just doesn't get it...
