High Pitched Whining (996)
Discussion
No .. Not a joke .
I've noticed this getting increasingly louder over the last few months .. It appears to be a transmission related noise as it disappears once slowing to lower speeds (say 10mph and slower). It's most noticeable when decelerating in or out of gear,is louder once the engine warms up and is hard to pinpoint the source of the noise , but at a guess its coming from the drive shaft area.
I pointed the noise out when last at my OPC and their response (after a drive in the car) was 'older 996's make various noises , don't worry bout it.'
SO ...... I don't worry about it , and if something gives I'm assuming (naively) that the warranty will look after it. In the meantime , curiosity leads me to post this thread......
Anyone come across similar noises like this before??
Meant to say , it's a C2 , so it's not the usual C4 drive train suspect.
(it's not coming from my wife as it also occurs when driving alone...)

Ta C2 .. I'm not remotely surprised by this , it's screaming 'transmission/ gearbox' at me .. And I'm screaming 'warranty' back at it!!
I'm curious to know if your 'box went all of a sudden , or was it still working for you when you had it brought in?
... I don't want to be left stranded some morning on my way into work...
TGFW.

I only get the noise when decelerating , either in or out of gear , I don't think it's a wheel bearing, I'd be hearing it all the time , surely?
I was messing with it today and the noise is more pronounced if I put longitudinal (for want of a better word) pressure on the gear lever whilst in gear, so it really is pointing that direction.....
Would any of you have any idea if it'll go suddenly or just get louder ?? .. All gear changes are smooth (2nd of course is a little stiffer than the rest)

If you can effect it by moving the gear lever it's not external to the box. If it's on the overrun then it could be excessive backlash on the gears or as has been mentioned a bearing.
Is it in all gears or one gear in particular. Is it like the diff whine you used to get in old Fords?

It's in all the gears on the overrun most especially , and yes , now that you come to say it , I'm reminded nostalgically of the diff whine while the short pants legs are getting roasted off me on the plastic back seats of my dad's cortina!!!!!
(Just how old are you Blairie ole buddy!!!!
I'm 85 miles shy of 50k (It's a big milestone for me so be gentle!!)
I would have presumed more mileage before I'd see any gearbox problems but there you go ..
I'm not really worried about it as Porsche will (hopefully) cover it, I'm more curious to know what might happen next , will it involve me sitting at the side of the road going 'Why didn't I get this sorted earlier'
The reason for holding back on getting it looked at is that it'll take a day to get up and back from Belfast and I just don't have that to give for the next few weeks.
... So .... Can I get away with it for the foreseeable??????

If it sounds like a Cortina but is only getting worse very gradually then I would say so. It sounds more of a wear situation than an imminent failure.
And stop pushing on the bloody gear lever if it makes it worse

.. I hear you!!
Thanks Rob .. That's not the first time you've given me good advice .. Guess I owe you a pint (Real ale only) at the PPU (Porsche piss up)
