Ferrari 348 with a terrible 355 bodykit on it
Discussion
I really can't understand why anyone would do this, but I saw in Bristol yesterday a 'Ferrari' which at first glance looked like one of the MR2 based kit cars.
However upon further inspection of the flaking alloys, badly fitted panels and rotting Targa roof panel it could be seen that this 'thing' indeed had a proper Ferrari interior, engine and gearbox.
A quick check once home revealed this 355 badged up monstrosity was actually registered as a very early 348.
The 'personalsised' number plate even had 355 in it.
So just one question really........ why ??

The 348 is the original shape as intended...
Until they realised what a munter it was.The 348 is the original shape as intended...
Ferrari are the masters at selling the 0.1 release, then whipping up a frenzy with SP1.
348 -> 355.
360 -> CS.
Still, lucky for those that like the ugly birds as they're a lot cheaper

Let's please not start this all over again ... it's all personal taste. I would never buy a 355 as I simply don't like the look of them, there are plenty more that will argue otherwise.
Anyone who argues that either car is cr*p simply shows their ignorance and lack of appreciation for fine engineering.

Have to question the wisdom of replying to this thread, but here we go...
I'm one of those weirdos with a 355-bodykitted 348, though by the sound of things mine's a little better than the one you saw.
I bought mine already done. Why? Because I prefer the looks of the 355 but the purer drive and (relative) mechanical simplicity of the 348. It was also for sale at a very good price. Admittedly I have considered reverting back to standard 348 bumpers and door panels (mine still has the original rear lights) though I can't justify the expense at the moment. Again, why? Although I like the 355 looks, having the car back as it was meant to be rather than some in-between Frankencar would somehow be more fitting.
At the end of the day it is a Ferrari, not an MR2 or Fiero, and wonderfully sublime to drive. I don't particularly care what other people think of it, and by extension, me. Still, it caused no end of consternation at the Ferrari 60th birthday bash at Silverstone when the marshals insisted I park with the rest of the 355s

Personally I think both cars have their merits for different reasons, they really are two quite different cars, I also understand why people would love to drive a 355 but can only afford a 348, its a personal choice I love driving both, however if you ever want your Ferrari to become an investment I would recommend original spec with a few more subtle improvements.
I did the same to my car.I prefer the more modern look of the 355 but my wallet said 348! So I bought a 348 and converted it.All the panels are just bolt on,so easily changed back.I can not see what all the fuss is about.The 348 spotted in Bristol was a dog by the sound of it that happened to also have 355 panels fitted to it.
348 targa'a are the same fibreglass over metal frame design as the earlier 308's and 328's it just does not work quite as well, Painted targa's look like they are metal but certainly original ones are not. rotting usually takes place in the top windscreen water gully where it drains through a tube in the pillar.
I agree all mods can be easily undone, obviously if you keep the original panels, Its quite likely though that in an accident it would be easier to get 355 panels to replace 348 ones.

Well there's the answer to my question then.
So still wondering why if it's simply bolt on and easy to do, how come that one has ended up looking so rough.
I would have asked the owner about the car if it had seen them, was stood around chatting with friends for a little while, went for some food and by the time we came out the car had gone.
It was Red and had an Irish plate that ended in 355.
