E90/E91/E92 Boost / Turbo actuator problems-feedback
Discussion
My car was having boost problems since I bought it in the summer.
The symptoms were:-
- surging and strange behaviour when coming off and on the throttle
- sometimes, on off days, no boost below 3000 rpm (only 5 psi according to the ecu reader I have), then full boost (ford cosworth style lag)
- less economy
- generally, felt crap
Today, took the car to the BMW dealer in Zagreb as I'm living over here at the moment, and they mentioned a small fix they've done on a couple of X3s, where they change a rod connected to the turbo actuator (that's how it was described). I didn't get the part number, but it was only about £12. The actuator itself couldn't be replaced here - they would have to replace the whole turbo (madness). However I think a fix is available in the UK for the actuator only.
The results are spectacular, the car feels smooth, progressive, boosts consistently to 22.5 PSI - it really feels like a new car.
For a £12 part.
Wish I'd done it sooner.
Hope this helps anyone who suffer the same symptoms I did. If anyone needs a part number, let me know.

- The car also has a remap from AmD, and they had no problems changing/diagnosing the car with the map.
- The car has only done 28k miles, it started playing up at 22k miles.. but rarely suffered problems, until recently, daily.

Hi Stuart.
Apologies for resurrecting an old post but I was wondering if you had the part number for the 'rod' you mention that resolved your issue.
Thanks in advance.
