I've got a pair of Gaerne MX boots that I've had for about 5 years and they're perfect for commuting.
They're a bit stiff on the sole so you don't have the flexibility of normal boots, but if you come off or bash against anything, nothing will give better protection.
I've only ever had MX boots for 20 years and would feel vulnerable in anything less.
