questions from an amateur

I was hoping for a few opinions/ideas if any of you guys have the time.
I've had a bike craving for many years but I keep putting it off by buying faster cars. Every year though the craving comes back even worse.
So..... I'm looking at doing the DAS course and getting me a bike
Seeing as I have no NCB and no years experience a VFR400 (NC30) seems sensible insurance wise (250 ish TPFT) and easily half the quote of GSXR400 and any 600 bikes.
Is this a decent choice for a couple of years till I get some NCB, and then a Duke, or are there any others that might be worth looking at.
I've got to keep costs down otherwise I'll have to tell the girlfriend what I'm planning
