Home - Office Mileage Claim?
Discussion
The mileage claim that employees make when using their own car is based on rates supplied to the government by the motoring organisations. It is supposed to take into account ALL the running costs of the individual's vehicle - not just petrol. If you are running a company car which is looked after and maintained by your employer, it would be grossly unfair to be claiming 40p a mile for a vehicle you do not actually maintain yourself.
If you have a petrol card and this card is being paid for by your employer - you are not making a mileage claim. However, you will probably be liable to the Fuel Scale Charge Benefit in Kind on private petrol.

Greg,
I may be either over complicating the situation or missing the point but I was in a similar circumstance last year - my resolution in consultation with the local tax office was as folows:-
Whilst my employment contract stated I was office based, it was not classed as my place of employment because I typically spent less time there than I did either on multiple customer sites or working from home.
I was therefore allowed to class home as my base and claim the costs of every work related journey including trips to the office back from the taxman under the "fixed profit car scheme".
However because of my employment contract I was unable to claim back work-office journeys from my employer.
For business trips started from home, I claimed the expeneses from my employer and then the balance from the taxman under fpcs.
Hope this helps - if you want more info. mail me through my profile.
