As youself - is my company "trading" i.e a bona fide "business"? If you can answer the question "yes", then IR35 will not be an issue. If the answer is "no", then IR35 could very well need to be considered.

Don't forget, the consideration of IR35 does not apply to your "company" as such, but to each contract your company undertakes.

One long term consequence of contracting which isn't often mentioned is the social side. I guess this depebd a lot on you as an individual, and you could make a positive of working for short periods in lots of places by making a very wide network of friends.

On the other hand you could, like me, work your butt off for 10/15 years then suddenly realise you are a sad IT billy-no-mates.

cant help but wonder about setting up myself instead of going via an umbrella.

I've thought about that a few times, but I've always decided to keep it all under my own banner. I spoke to one of the popular umbrella companies who happily claim they can get you up to 80% of your payment as take-home but after 5 mins on the phone to them it turned out to be about 61% in my case......so the phone call ended quite quickly. Different circumstances may yield more for you, however.
