Situation update.
Recieved my identical drive from Ebay today and sucessfully swapped over the PCB board under the drive...!! I was right in that the original board is fried!
Initially hooray...Its spinning and sounding fine....then oh bugger....Its making a loud clicking noise which i can only assume is something to do with the head trying to move as the drive is spinning....
Any thoughts on what this may be ??
Phone my mate at http://Brody.Org.uk - he's a data recovery "expert"... knows his sh1t, plus he's a (two-wheeled) petrol head.Recieved my identical drive from Ebay today and sucessfully swapped over the PCB board under the drive...!! I was right in that the original board is fried!

The "tick tick tick" noise is bad. If it's the "grindy scrape squeal" noise it's dire.
The first is the heads bouncing off the platters, so you've got a chance to back up... do so NOW. The freezer trick can buy time on this one.
The second is the heads not even bothering with the whole float thing and just ripping the magnetic surface off (i.e. it's metal on glass you're hearing), back up NOW. If you can't do it right now, power the thing down until you can. Don't expect to get everything back in one piece though.
