thanks guys, I think I'm learning a lot from this. Looks like I'm going to have a busy few weeks catching up.

I'm ovbiously more old school than I thought as I would have said that the MVC was purely a UI pattern, which just calls back to the rest of the app (i.e. business onjects talking to a DB layer). At least this is how I've used Struts in the past, with the controller servlets calling back to Session EJBs in turn talking to entity ones.
