I'm not convinced that oil leaks alone are sufficient justification for a top end rebuild at all. 964s potentially leak oil from all sorts of places - cylinder bases, through bolts etc. as well as the well known non-gasketted heads (if you have an early car) but some of these are not necessarily addressed in a purely top end rebuild.

The real justification for the top end work is lack of compression. Have you had a leak down test done?? If that is OK it's worth putting off the rebuild and just putting up with the leaks making sure you check oil level regularly until things get really bad.

You don't mention your mileage, but often rebuilds undertaken before 120,000 or so are often premature.

Given that you're going to be spending the thick end of £4000 on a decent rebuild it's worth doing it for the right reasons.

There are a few specialists in Scotland but I'm not familiar enough to recommend. I'm sure there are other who will.

Regards

Trackie.

I agree with the above post. oil can leak form all over the place. My car had good leak down test results and it turns out that there was very little oil leaking from the head. (rebuild forced due to other failure not oil leak related )

YHM by the way.

I know some oil leaks were due to the leakage past the headbolts, and that this design changed with the 993. As a result, many people replace the headbolts on the 964 with the 993 ones (o-ring instead of washer or something like that?) and this cuts down the amount of oil that comes out too.

Can you get to these bolts without taking the engine out? Maybe through the rear arches?

Would be good to know where your oil leaks are most troublesome before deciding on the rebuild surely?

I know lots of people who have had 993 oil leaks because the little filter on the bottom of the engine hasn't been tightened enough...

Let's just say that we have a pretty large Scottish customer base and that many a 9m "influenced" car can be seen low flying around Knockhill, so if you need help or a quote please call or mail.
