I have an oldish iPad 4 I think and its starting to slow right down now.

So was thinking about a new one - All I really use it for is to read my books, on the web, watch a few streamed things while away. Nothing to taxing.

After suggestions of what to get - the best bang for bucks - not the most expensive and does not have to be the newest. Which chip to look for etc

Thanks

I know very little about them, but Argos have some deals on, that seemed to get a lot of heat on hotukdeals..

2021 model from £259

Nowhere near the latest super spec , im guessing. But maybe right for your basic stuff

Edit to add, look at Costco aswell, seems some deals to be had on them

I would get the cheapest one with a M chip.

iPad 10th gen is fine for most uses, will be ok for your use case

As above, it doesn’t have the M series chip, so won’t do Apple Intelligence when that comes out, if thats important to you

There’s a £40 gift voucher / discount type thing if you buy iPad 10th gen from Apple Store over this weekend

That basic iPad only has 64gb memory which isn’t great. Bump it up to a more realistic 256gb and it’s £429.

At that price you may as well spend the bit extra for an air or mini which has 128 gb and should be fine for your needs

As you seem to “run your iPad into the ground” it seems a false economy to buy one with such limited storage- even with your modest requirements.

I’d grit my teeth and pay the extra for a new air or mini and be assured it will last a lot longer

The best value when looked at a per day cost will be the newest model as you can run it then for the longest period before it becomes obsolete.

I would definitely agree with this. And especially so with Apple products where the initial expense is offset by ongoing support.

I have only just purchased an iPhone 16 to replace my 8 plus. My 8 is long in the tooth but still gets security updates. Memory is an issue now (64gb as it happens) but if I’d shelled out the extra all those years ago I’d probably be able to get another year out of the phone.

The standard iPad is a 2022 model, so will probably get replaced in March but it’s under £300 and fine for every day use. It went “all-screen” in the last update so looks the same as an Air at a glance.

A 5th gen Air will last longer, but costs nearly twice as much so you could always go with the standard model and replace it a bit sooner and still be quids in.

Do you just need one that works today or do you plan to run it into the ground?
64GB isn't much, but do you store anything locally?

It is hard to see the extra value in the Air at twice the price and up, and even harder the Pro.

I think I'd be on the basic iPad, probably the 64GB

The basic iPad 10th Gen with 64GB will do everything you mention and more. You need more storage if you want to install lots of apps and then add photos, videos etc. If you don't plan doing much of this then buy the cheapest one you can find, Argos, Amazon etc. The A14 Bionic chip is pretty fast for a tablet base and you're likely to get 8+ years out of it with Apple updates.

The low prices are Apple clearing stock as a new one will be released soon, as mentioned above. The new price might be slightly higher and it will probably come with 128GB as standard and a faster CPU.
