I took this trim off to do something and now can't get it back. Don't seem to be able to line up the bits.

I reckon for someone who does it all the time it's *really* easy.. and was hoping such a person could tell me the trick.

Please, and thank you! smile

Sometimes the little clips give up the ghost and stop working. Maybe try them separately, make sure they are gripping properly?

If the trim should slide back into place it’s often easier to have all the trim clips already in their holes on the vehicle and then the trim slides onto them.

Alternatively, do the trim clips have a centre that pushes in and therefore expands so they can’t just be pushed back in?

Looks like the plug thingys in image one need replacing. A dab of silicone 'may' help.

First triple check there's no new dangly things like wires getting in the way of the trim going back. even a little thing out of place can make this hard.
You should be able to easily get it 'in place', then just give the plastic a thump right over the clip to push it the final 1cm home.

I wouldn't try test fitting those clips on their own as it can be a right pain getting them back out.

The little plastic cone things are a standard bit you can get off eBay or Amazon. "Door panel clips".

You often need to bend the trim panel to get everything to align then thump it into place.

No, BANG, they’re, BANG, ok, they just need BANG BANG more pressure to BANG click into CRACK. Oh.
Yeah, silicone.

I think the little sticky out bits need to be slid out of the holder on the bit of trim. They fit into the drilled hole, there might be a central bit that pushes in and expands the sides to stop rattling. Then the the trim slide over them, once they are fitted.

Unless the other side of the clip has a slot, a two part action, or a clear indication of how to undo it, it is not re-usable. Always buy new panel clips for these applications.
Ensure wires etc are tucked back.
Fit new clips. Bang confidently home.

Unfortunately that's often the only way to replace them.
If you try & push the trim you'll get a certain amount of flexing of the plastic, usually just enough to stop them engaging but catching it by surprise with an impact will do it.
Aging plastic & impact sometimes don't mix.......

Also the case that if it's warm, it's more likely to pop in rather than crack.

So leave it broken until summer? smile

Is that one where the little clips should be on the "car" itself and then the trim is placed to one side and then slid a cm or so to engage with them *rather* than the clips are on the trim and the piece pushed into place?

They look exactly the same as the door card clips on my MG ZT (probably exactly being BMW). Having removed my door cards recently to retrim I know how much of a pain they are.

Generally it's just a case of lining up the clips with the holes in the body just giving it a good whack to clip in, but sometimes the clips can rattle around in the holders on the plastic part and then not be in the right place to engage. If that is the case for you a little bit of tape on the bit that holds the clip to stop it moving can help.

Also the clips themselves can be a bit single use, sometimes you can get away with reuse, but they can lose their shape and also fracture at the narrowest point. Again also check the plastic that holds the clip hasn't fractured and then bending when you are trying to fit the part. I had that on one of my door cards so fixed it with copious amounts of hot melt glue hehe

I imagine they an expanding rivet. On assembly there is a mushroom head that protrudes to the outside. So an integral, but two-part clip. When assembling, the clip is push into the retaining hole on the steel body work, and then the mushroom head is pushed flush with the surface of the body of the clip. To remove, you need to get your nails or a tool under the body of the mushroom head and pull or screw it out, to allow the fixing legs to flex inwards. If can search on OEM BMW, you may be able to find the precise part.

That is usually found on door trims, where the surface is touchable all the time, so the clip is on the inside.

Nope. BMW use things like these. (Note: I have a BMW and have bought both the BMW version of these and ebay ones -- the ebay ones are slightly better).

Don't think they are used internally (i.e. a boot trim).

Why doesn't it line up? Are you sure your aiming for the right hole? The clips have a little adjustment in the receiver of the plastic trim piece - maybe shuffle them around a bit?
