Hi all, I am new to this forum!

I recently bought a used 2011 Hyundai IX35, CRDI 1.7 Diesel which has done just over 110,000 miles. I have a couple of issues, one which is diagnosed, but the other I am hoping someone here can help me with.

The first issue is that the clutch seems to be wearing out. It is quite difficult at times to get in to 1st gear, and the issue seems intermittent. Took it to my local mechanic and to Halfords as well, and both concluded that the clutch needs replacing, possibly along with the dual mass flywheel. The reason I have mentioned this is, perhaps if this has something to do with the latter issue?

The second issue is what concerns me. There seems to a vibration and a noise when accelerating, especially at low revs. I can only describe the noise like a mild boom followed by a noise similar to that of a spray. Imagine the noise an airbus aeroplane makes when taking off - something similar to that, but for a very short duration like a second or two at most Once you pick up speed, it goes away. It only happens when in gear and when in motion. I tried revving it up to about 3000-4000 rpm in neutral, but there was no vibration nor said noise. There is absolutely no rattling or knocking sound at all either.

One of the mechanics thinks it could be something minor, like a loose cable or something to do with the pipes. He was certain that it wasn't the turbo as it's not happening when revving up in neutral.

Is there anyone who can possibly hypothesise what the issue might be based on my description and your experience?

Thank you!

Well, I am sorry but that doesn't sound like the clutch needs replacing, more like an alignment issue with the gear selectors.

Having said that if you (very deliberately) make sure you completely push the clutch pedal down does it make any difference?

This one (from your description, sorry) I have absolutely no idea on.

When you say vibration & noise when accelerating it would imply possibly DMF failure, but not when you describe the noise.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I was speaking to someone else yesterday and described the issue. The clutch has a low biting point, like a really low point, so he said that doesn't sound like a worn clutch. Before this conversation, I took the car to two mechanics, one my local and the other a reputed chain. Both said that the clutch may be wearing out and needed to ve replaced, potentially along with the dual mass flywheel. Taking the car to another mechanic today.

And yes, I do press the pedal to the bottom and have, as you tried very deliberately pressed it to the max and it still happens. Occasionally it shifts gears smoothly (low gears like 1 and 2 are the issue ones). There are no issues with the higher gears at all, no burning smell etc..

With regards to the vibration and noise, I have been told it may be a loose engine mount...

The low biting point might be a worn master cylinder, or a worn slave cylinder (although you'd see fluid loss here), a worn clutch release arm pivot (if it has a release arm) or a self adjusting clutch where the adjuster has slipped and 'over adjusted'. It might also be a clutch that has simply worn out.

Vibration at the start of acceleration could be a worn clutch or a worn pilot bearing. Either of these could cause symptoms even while the clutch is nominally fully engaged but are more likely if the vibration happens while the clutch is slipping. A faulty self-adjusting clutch can also cause vibrations.

Hi

I take it when in motion the clutch itself feels fine and not slipping etc?

If so please do not go down the clutch flywheel replacement route yet

95% confident it won’t be that

Know a friend who is in the trade and has had lots of Hyundai’s & Kia’s and has been through a few that had the same issue

Very very low biting points, hard to get into first or when your driving around town sometimes it’ll be hard to select gears whereas sometimes it’s fine

On one Hyundai they even replaced the clutch kit and the biting point was still right to the floor like literally it on or off that’s it

I don’t know if they ever got to the bottom of the issues but as one poster suggested on here look at all the external stuff like master and slave cylinders, I believe they also have some kinda compensator that sits by the bulkhead basically look at all the external stuff be 100% confident it’s nothing to do with those before you spend mega monies on the flywheel and clutch

If you YouTube it Hyundai Kia low clutch biting point you’ll see people with the same issues

Do let us know if you get this sorted

The noise and vibration on acceleration am not sure what that might be

All the best

Good call, sure it's been mentioned on here before; you jogged my memory.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384940095004

e-bayer says -"It isn't uncommon for these to leak slightly causing the car to be hard to get into gear. "
OP - Check for fluid leaks/drop in reservoir.

Yeh no worries

Just a shame when people have to change the clutch
Flywheel and the problem still persists

Not saying the OP’s clutch might not be on the way out but certainly somehow needs to check all the ancillaries related to the clutch system before ripping off the box I feel

That ebay seller from NI brilliant guy to deal with

Only issue in this for the OP is purchasing that compensator and it doesn’t fix the problem as it’s not cheap

Really need someone who deals with this issue and can pinpoint it before chucking parts at it

Reading a description at the end of a keyboard you can only go on common faults and a hopefully accurate tale of the symptoms. You reminded me I'd seen it before: thought at the time WTF part does that play on Kia's that other manufacturers manage without ?
I've not seen it before BUT been out of the repair trade for decades,
The noise ? Virtually impossible to diagnose likely an intake pipe but then I'd expect a drop off in performance.

Some cars use a one-way restrictor to limit how quickly the clutch can be engaged, and perhaps it's one of those.

Must be related to something like that ? I'm curious why a conventional clutch I'm familiar with requires a valve/regulator whatever, when they've functioned for decades IME without.

Me too, but apparently manufacturers think some drivers are incompetent idiots.

Hahaha some good input there lads

It’s the Hyundai’s & Kia’s I’ve seen these issues with

Very very low biting points and when driving most the times difficult to engage gears

Would be ace to know if the OP gets this fixed and if it infact does end being the Compensator/Regulator or something external and hopefully a cheaper for him
