I am advised that disk problems are less than unique on Boxsters. Mine is less than 2 years old and i have just been advised by my main dealership that replacement disks are not included in the warranty. According to the service engineer the discs have rusted as a result of living on the East coast. Can anyone throw any hope my way. I am advised that new disks are necessary, but feel well agrieved by Porsches warranty shortfall. Furthermore, is it likely to happen again if i fit new disks ?

Yes, the discs rust very very easily and this can be particularly bad on cars which are used infrequently, live near the coast (salt water) or washed and put away in the garage without taking the car out for a spin to dry the brakes.

On the other hand in my experience some dealers are over-enthusiastic in wanting to replace discs which can be fixed by a good run with hard braking or skimming. Examine the discs yourself - if it looks like simple surface rust then take it for a good run, brake hard. If the discs come back shiny then they should be fine to continue with. The insides of the rears tend to be the worst place.

I was also recently told by an OPC that the discs and pads on my '02 996 needed replacing.
Having examined them myself I think they were seriously trying it on. I have also been told that it is not uncommon for this "fault" to be identified!!

I was recently advised by my OPC that my disks need skimming.

I shall be letting a well-known local independent change 'em and put on new pads and flush the braking fluid with some lovely new stuff shortly.

But mine really were knackered - loads of trackdays have taken their toll and there is a large, noticeable ridge at the periphery of the disc...

Discs are never going to be covered under warranty unless there was some manufacturing problem with them. I have had discs replaced (on our Chimaera) under warranty but this was because they "warped" within days of being replaced...

I agree that main dealers are too keen when it comes to advising that disks need replacing. I've had a couple of occurences of this, and in both cases the disks were replaced about a year and 15000 miles later, when I determined that the corrosion was getting fairly bad.

To help keep the disks in fine fettle, you should regularly do a heavy brake test (when there's no one behind you!), as gentle driving and irregular use will allow the disks to corrode quickly.
