Hi,

One of my housemates has just bought a mk2 MR2. It's a naturally aspirated japanese import of unknown spec with various 'go faster bits'. And go faster it does - quite rapid once you hit 5000rpm (I presume it's got variable cam timing which changes there or something?) and I was surprised by the handling which seemed to be nicely balanced and quite inert. None of the "oh my god we're going to die" moments I expected from a mid engined RWD car. I was impressed with it (especially for £1200) and I'm used to driving quick-ish cars. It's owner has never driven anything quicker than his previous naturally aspirated Citroen ZX diesel (I believe 0-60 is qouted at 17 seconds for it!!) so understandably he stepped out the car viibly shaking, with the immortal comment "the entire time I'm in that car I feel like I'm being very very naughty"

So, all in all a pleasant surprise and theres one thing I don't quite understand.....

It has a box in the cockpit about the size of a DVD case labelled "ACS pro flow conditioner system" and three adjustment knobs, "lo" "mid" and "hi" with an LED which changes colour as you adjust them. I haven't fiddled with it, but he tells me it produces a misfire if adjusted to one extream and the other way he seems to be able to adjust how much power it prodcues and also where it falls in the rev range. Does anyone know what this is??

All the mk2 n/a MR2s have ACS the system that makes if feel like VVTi (to which it is totally un related) basically the ACS system opens up whats basically an extended inlet tract half way along the inlet manifold altering air flow into the cylinder, short manifolds = more torque low down, long manifols make more top end power but little torque, this is toyota best of both worlds system. NOT to be confused with TVIS that opens a 2nd set of entirely independant inlet runners. I suspect the "knob" alters the pressure the actuator for the system so changing where it occurs in the revs.

Ahaha - thought it might be something like that

Are they usually cockpit adjustable like that? It looked like an add-on.

Surprised how quick it was, especially in outright grip. There again cars always seem quicker when someone else is driving and my knuckles are white against the dashboard .....that ZX kept going through my mind!
