Sound visualisation software

I have a colleague who is using sound spectrum g-force and it is perfect, bar the fact the commercial license is so prohibitively expensive, he wants to use something else. Now, a one off license or a one off payment is OK, but does anyone have any ideas on what he can use. Basically he has it on the laptop, creating sound art, projected onto a screen behind the two guitarists. At the moment, it isn't even working to their beet.
It is just he wants to start gigging and touring with this and wants to do it above board

Gigging and above board, probably does mean expensive commercial licences.
