Hotwire is a term applied to a part of the fuel injection system.
It's fitted to the 1991 on car's.
It is in the air inlet supply to the engine, this wire has a current which heats the wire to a known value
when the air passes over it - it cools it.
The engine management conputer then knows how much air
is entering the engine and therefore how much fuel to put in.
The other type of system is called the 'flap' or 'flapper' - the air pushed a flap - giving the same but slightly less accurate result !

Phil I'm no expert but when doing the research 
before purchasing my 
(sorry dear) our wedge, one of the things that came up was .........
Make sure its a "hot-wired" car.
The reason being that if the fuel system/engine management side of things went ti**s up it can be a real pain to sort out,
in fact I remember reading one hell of a horror story on this subject some years ago in "Sprint".
In terms of telling a "Hotwire" from a pre "Hotwire" car I believe I'm correct in saying (and if not, I'm sure someone will put me right
) that if you turn on the ignition but without starting the engine you can hear the sound of the petrol pump priming itself, this lasts for about two seconds.
