there is however, and typical for PH unfortunately, the usual undertones of racism in the thread.
I can't agree. I don't think travellers are discriminated against because of race or ethnicity, but rather because so many of them are criminals and people have had bad experiences. Will the police now allow applications from people with criminal records?

and it's PCCs who aren't allowed criminal convictions, not Constables or Police Staff
http://www.south-wales.police.uk/apply-for-a-job/p... - refers to a UK national document as to which criminal coinvictions may bprevent appointment to the Office of COnstable ...
There's an unexpected level of love on this thread for a societal group who, generalisation notwithstanding, are well-known and well-documented for being lying, stealing, cheating, non-contributory members of the population.
I can only guess that those praising them are hoping that by doing so, karma will dictate that their newly-tarmaced drives won't lift and crumble, nor will their freshly-lopped trees die or collapse onto next door's car.
And no, a traveller does not, by dint of being a traveller, belong to a racial group. They may do so for other reasons but not because they are travellers. Remember that the term traveller in the present context does not necessarily or automatically mean gypsy, roma, etc. Those groups may well have a claim to racial/ethnic minority status, but we're talking here about those who own nice big houses elsewhere (often in Eire) but "travel" to the UK mainland each year in order to both create havoc and, often simultaneously, line their pockets for a big fat winter. On that basis, difficult to see how accusations of racism are even halfway valid.

It's always nice when someone uses derogatory stereotypes to generalise over large groups of people so that even if people don't fit the stereotypes, they're unfairly judged.
