Quite the most ridiculously hard game I have ever played to be honest
A bizarre choice for a PSN free game as it will only appeal to a tiny market and a tiny audience of Souls type players who enjoy just dying endlessly and having very little choice about it.
I can see the appeal to weird folk, but for me it lasted about an hour before it was uninstalled. I play games to have fun and enjoy myself, nit to be subjected to chlidish programmers laughing in a corner saying (look what we did, arent we clever.)
It's a great game, probably one of the best on the PS4, but not very accessible or mass-market friendly. I had the same feeling initially about Demon's Souls on the PS3 but once I got into it, I found it to be one of the most engrossing and rewarding games on the console.A bizarre choice for a PSN free game as it will only appeal to a tiny market and a tiny audience of Souls type players who enjoy just dying endlessly and having very little choice about it.

Lack of save points is also a pain in the arse! Although I believe there are some short cuts through the levels to the bosses to help. And the save points are after you've killed them I believe? Not really helpful at the start when your character is pretty weak!
The levels are typically structured so that you open up lots of shortcuts, so whilst there aren't many save points, the ones that there are allow you to quickly get back to a later section of the area. Gathering the resource points is all well and good, but bear in mind that you don't need to level up, it certainly makes it easier to have more health and stamina, but the real levelling up is done by you and your muscle memory, learning the enemy attacks and weaknesses and what you can get away with.
Don't forget that at the start of the game, you can't level up until you've progressed past a certain point. The first arrival into Yharnam is a small circular gauntlet map that ends after you discover the Cleric Beast. It's supposed to teach you the basics of the game. You can power level before taking on the Cleric Beast or Father Gascoigne if you so wish and the sewers that you can reach before meeting the Cleric Beast have some good items in them.

Central Yharnam has to be one of the toughest 'introduction' levels in videogame history, though. You definitely need to motivate yourself to keep playing through the multiple deaths you will receive as a complete beginner. Also a bit mean to not allow you to level until you receive some Insight which might take you hours to find (and I don't think that they ever explain that mechanic to the player).I did buy the original GOTY edition on disc and played maybe 15 hours of it (didn't get too far though, as I was a bit rubbish) before leaving it for a bit and then getting distracted with other games. Now that the digital download is free on plus and the DLC only about £6 I got that and went for a full non-disc install and have just started a new game as I've totally forgotten the controls and fighting mechanics and wouldn't have got much out of continuing the old save.
I have to say that I'm really loving it - makes a lot more sense when you have the general idea of the game from the very start and you realise that dying isn't a big deal and that you can always harvest more blood echoes even if you lose a load (plus you might be able to get the original ones back too).
Managed to get the shortcut gate to the left of Gilbert's place unlocked with no deaths on my first try and will go back tonight to get to the Cleric Beast (will almost certainly get killed on the first encounter) so that I can start leveling up. I remember where I can find a nice Saw Spear which should help when I go after the Cleric Beast 'properly' after doing a few circuits of the first area to power-level. Also will hopefully get the shortcut gate near the bottom of the ladder done tonight too. IIRC you have to beat the big troll thing lurking nearby.
Ancient thread bump!
I've had Bloodborne on the PS4 since mid 2017. I spent quite a few hours wandering around in central Yharnam killing stuff, and then at the end of 2019 I got to the point where I unlocked the shortcut back up to the bridge where the first boss is- and then stopped playing. I've never been any good at boss fights in games, and that, combined with how difficult I expected it to be (given the type of game), meant I kept making excuses for not giving it a go.
Recently however I'd decided to give Bloodborne another go and so yesterday I finally decided to have a go at fighting the Cleric Beast...
...and promptly defeated him on my second attempt!
That is all

After you've killed the first boss you can start boosting your stats as you level up, so in a way things could get easier (but they don't). The second boss, Father Gascoigne, is a lot tougher but nothing in the game is insurmountable.
I have done a couple of stat upgrades but need to give some thought as to what stats to invest in.Good to know it only gets more difficult from here on!

So just defeated Father Gascoigne- took 6 or 7 attempts so not too bad. Much harder than the first boss just due to the speed. I found I struggled to get time to even use the blood vials! His first form was fine, but the reach he has with the second and third forms makes it tough to evade at times. Made use of the music box and molotovs though which did the trick. I'm also getting the hang of the timing for the stun with the pistol which helps a lot.If you are struggling, the axe weapon will see you through all of the game with ease. The cane is the toughest starting weapon (and also the most fun). The axe has power and utility and suffers little penalty in terms of speed, you really can blow through the game with it if you want.

It's funny you should say that as I started out with the Saw-cleaver, then bought the Kirkhammer as soon as it became available- but never really gelled with either. As soon as I got the mark that let me buy any of the starting weapons I bought the Hunter Axe and it's been a revelation! Last night I blitzed through the Cathedral Ward without much trouble all the way to the next boss, unlocking all of the gates but not actually attempting the boss fight yet. The axe is just so much better. I can see me keeping hold of that for a long time.I also swapped out the blunderbuss for the pistol as wide spread of the blunderbuss just doesn't seem to serve any benefit in Bloodborne (for what you use the guns for), so the extra damage (more than twice as much) of the pistol is just much more useful. Got both the axe and the pistol upgraded quite a bit now and doing very good damage with both.
Had a quick venture into Old Yharnam too, and the axe really shines against those fast moving 'things' - timing the R2 power attack so that it activates just as they run into range is very satisfying.
Defeated the Blood Starved Beast last night. Usual pattern of the first couple of attempts feeling like 'this is impossible then gradually getting a handle on its movements, then by the 5th (sucessful) attempt it felt like I could have kept going indefinitely! Much easier than Father Gascoigne. Used the fire paper to good effect.
Also took out the hunter with the gattling gun on the clock tower on the 2nd attempt.
I'm approx level 33 now and really getting into the swing of it
Can anyone explain how the chalice dungeons work? I have a chalice now so when created are they essentially random dungeons with random enemies, bosses, and loot etc?
