And just gotten my beta key after a lot of hassle.

Overall though even after the first few games, highly enjoyable having come from WoT and gotten a tad bored with it.
I brought myself a USS Sims and the first time out resulted in an early death.. but not before i took down the enemy's only carrier with a full spread of torpedoes hehe

Given that the mechanics of the game are very similar to WoT, anyone coming from WoT should fell quite at home with Warships. Initial impressions are that you can't go scooting off on your own and expect to survive long, so once new players discover this for themselves, random teams may become a little more cohesive than they tend to be in tanks. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

For obvious reasons the play is slower than tanks, but it's nice not to continuously hear 'that one bounced' or 'that one didn't go through'. It's still fairly early days for myself, and obviously the game is still in early development, but I wonder how long it will be before it all becomes a bit tedious. Whilst the game looks good, the play is somewhat one dimensional, so I guess only time will tell.

I've finally got hold of a beta key bounce. Turns out my son had gotten one from his old WOT account which I had registered for beta too, but forgot totally to look for it until last night boxedin. Only managed a few games after the download last night, but first impressions are the same - seems very nice and a good change of pace from tanks.

It's hard to tell as the beta players are probably those more inclined to be wanting to play the game, but the few games I played there were signs of people working together, and even better none of the "stupid team" nonsense in chat. Fingers crossed the slower pace of the game will keep some of the morons away.

I see what you mean about the longevity of it. I think for me the key will be to play it in small doses rather than OD on it in long sessions. If they manage to get the unified account thing to work, so that premium time spreads across WOWS and WOT at the same time then this is a great addition to the stable I would say.

Yes, it's quite good for a few games now and again. It's not a game I would ever grind or pay for a premium account on though.

If Youtube wasn't so bloody awful to use since Google+ was introduced, I'd stick some footage up on there.

I forgot to say that normally, above each ship there's a symbol denoting the class (destroyer, carrier etc), a thin health bar & their distance away in Km. You can see more information by pressing Alt, but it doesn't stay toggled on, which is a PITA. However you can force it to stay on by going to....

Settings -> Controls -> Keyboard Controls

Scroll down until you find "Details" and change the secondary key to Ctrl-Alt. Apply and OK to save.

Then the next time you're in a game, press Alt and you'll get the name of the ship, player name and a more detailed heath bar.

Unfortunately it forgets these changes when you log out, so you have to do this each time you fire up the game. I've done it so many times now that it doesn't take long. I usually do it while the ship is moving out at the start.

Thanks for the tip, will keep that in mind.

Unlocked the Umikaze and the St Louis today...

The Umi's a horrendous little terror, you don't spot them till within 5km and by then if it's got the upgraded torpedos, it'll drop it's payload and will smack you hard if you're not watching for the torpedoes, I'm loving mine biggrin

And the St Louis, well ... only on my 3rd game and went into a fight with a Kongo. he smashed me hard.. but he was set on fire multiple times hehe and one salvo of AP finished him off before his friend nailed me frown

Genuinely enjoying the game, WG have actually got another decent game together if they keep this as is.

The St Louis is a bit OP really. So many guns and a quick reload. I managed to circle strafe a Myogi tier 4 Japanese battleship with it once. Even in a Kongo it's best to keep them away because they do tend to cause fires.

I'm up to the tier 5 Japanese Destroyer, the Minikaze. It's elited now, but it's a keeper.

The stock torpedoes have a 7km range and for the upgraded ones it's 10km. The longer range ones are 11 knots slower though and in reality it's almost impossible to hit anything that far out. So I switched back to the 7km ones.

Fortunately, now the stupid space battleship thing is over, they've left the 5 extra port spaces for other ships. They really should have provided some gold so you can remove equipment and buy port spaces anyway.

Tried to play a CV yesterday. Thankfully it was only in a co-op battle as I was absolutely useless. No idea at all what I was doing as not a single aspect of controlling and fighting with aircraft was intuitive. Time to see if there are any CV tutorials out there.

Haven't tried a CV yet. Only seen one played once on a stream, couldn't make head nor tail of the display or what was going on. To quote Uncle Albert, "The screen was all blibs and blobs". Certainly looked a bit more involved than say Artillery is in WOT.

I'm finding cruisers good fun to play right now, they have a good mix of options - decent guns, torps and pretty good speed. Just got into the Phoenix last night and its a world of difference to the St Louis, really looking forward to playing it more now.

Oh it's definitely more involved than arty. Arty is just a case of selecting your target and pressing the fire button once the aiming reticle has shrunk from the size of a couple of counties to just a few post codes, and keeping your fingers crossed that the target doesn't move in the meantime.

I managed to get 3 flights airborne, and even send them to different parts of the map, but actually getting them to engage a target was a whole new ball game, one that I failed at miserably. But at least I have found a tutorial now, so I'll have another go once I've read through it.

Well you could spend about £14 for a premium ship and play now, but I don't think it'll be that long before it's in open beta.

Yes, any retard can (and does) play arty, but aircraft carriers look to be hugely complicated to play well. You certainly need to be good at muti-tasking. As I said in the WoT thread, I didn't like the top down RTS style or that you lose out on how good the game actually looks as well.

This guy has been playing WoWs from alpha and streams on Twitch fairly often:

He's got historical videos about certain ships, game tips and other useful stuff too. There's one about carriers I can see that might help you.

The one about captain's skills is particularly useful for any class of ship.

Is that the case as the shop says "You will receive the item from this pre-order bundle after the Closed Beta."
Im tempted as I really want to have a go

Buying a premium ship now gives access to the closed beta apparently. I think they mean the ship will also be in your account when the closed beta finishes, but you will have access straight away (allowing for a delay for the server to update your account of course). I've seen the premium ships in the beta too, so it seems you can also use them in the CBT.

A couple of people playing yesterday had gotten in that way.

Yes, you keep the ship, but any credits, progress and crew training will get zeroed when it goes into open beta.

I think I'd probably go for either the Soviet or Japanese one personally. I don't know what the Soviet ships are like in general, as there aren't any regular ones in the game yet, but it's a Russian developed game, so they're bound to be OP.

Here's a look at all 3:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDgg_pjsaA8

I got this earlier this afternoon:

Fuso, the tier 6 Japanese battleship.

It has six of those main gun turrets, so it can really rain down fire. I've had one game in it so far and nailed 3 ships with it.

I have actually seen that video before, but even at that fairly basic level, he is assuming you know how to control your aircraft and move them around the map towards a particular target. Will have to play a few more times, and hope I don't let my team down too badly while I try to learn the absolute basics. Thank god for co-op games.

Co-op is great. If they pull it from the final release, I'm out. It's handy for playing with a stock ship too.

Unless they incorporate a training option, similar to that in World of Tanks, I think they'd be daft to drop the co-op battles.
