Unfortunately I have an oil leak so am thinking it makes sense to have the oil and filter changed at the same time.

Could somebody please let me know which filters are favoured for the V8 ? Seems to be quite a range of choice.

From what I've read on the Chimaera forum (used to have one) you can't go far wrong with a genuine Land Rover filter.

This is presuming there are no clearance issues in a V8S?

Agreed. Just call into your local Land Rover dealer and get a classic Range Rover 3.9L filter, and a sump plug gasket while you're at it. About £12.00.

RE the oil leak. It's common for rocker cover gaskets to leak. The oil collects in the valley gasket and then runs down the back of the block and around the bell housing so it looks like its comming from the back of the sump. You haven't done many miles since the rebuild so it might be worth checking to see if the rocker cover bolts need a tweak.

Like Joe said RR Classic is what you are after.

I used to get mine from Halfrauds but recently discovered a company called Beartech. They specialise in Land Rover Spares (branches elswhere too) they sold me a filter for about £7. Genuine part and cheaper than a Halfrauds special.

FWIW most filters are manufactured in the same factory, and then sprayed different colours on the way out.

I could probably name 20 or so brands of filter, and I reckon a good half of those will be identical to the genuine one in all but colour and price.

Motaquip filters are made by Purflux, so I just run with them. Mecca (sp?) are also the same. The ones I try and stay away from are Mann, as in my experience they skimp on the return flow drillings. It's not the same for every part number though.
