....Have read that TVR employed an extended boss for these mirrors .....
There was a post here recently with one of these extended bosses but this was the first and only time I've seen one.

You will need a mirror with a mount large enough to cover the hole where the CX boss went or fill in the hole and paint before following the process above to fit the MX mirror. Follow the links in the above posts to see some options.

Wouldn't both with the CX type. Continuously coming loose, fragile and stupidly expensive.

This is a link to one supplier of the stainless steel bits to replace the spring mounting inside the MX5 Mk1 mirror, the original will definitely be rusty!

Do please trial fit and mess about a bit to be sure you can get the mirror level before you assemble.

For anyone with doubts about fitting brand new MX5 mk1 mirrors-totally go ahead and do it.
My TVR S2 is so much better now after 2 hrs work fitting these.
Many thanks to Mr Grey for the step by step guide to fitting MX5 mirrors.
The key to fitting these is getting hold of the M6 rubber rivnuts as you pointed out.
I would say using power tools to remove the glued in plastic boss that holds the metal barbell, filling and then respraying isn't needed, all you need is some masking tape, a junior hacksaw and some bangs with hammer and chisel to get the old plastic boss out and roughly level the area.
Take it slowly measuring twice to make sure the first hole is in the correct place, then drill out the holes to take the rivnuts using the metal mirror housing as a template, then bash in the rivnuts (soak in boiling water to soften and they go in easier).
The new MX5 mirror housing totally covers up the old plastic boss area.
Enjoy!
