Driving Lights

Having read a previous posting, I managed to solve the problem as to why my driving lights weren't working namely that, although wired through a switch on the dash (like fog lamps), they're only powered when the main beam is on (like spot lamps).
The follow on from this is that, after some basic investigation, the lights fitted to my S appear to be fog lamps i.e. they have a lens pattern designed to give a low broad beam to cut under fog and illuminate the sides of the road. Given the wiring configuration, it would make more sense to have spot lights fitted i.e. with a lens pattern (or lack of pattern) designed to give a thin pencil beam in order to penetrate a long distance ahead. This would also help to counter the problems induced by the night-light powered standard headlamps.
So, my question (finally) is, has anyone replace the fog lamps with spots and, if so, what model was used and how easy was it?
