Hi Guys,

Can anyone clear up my confusion? Steve's bible says that the bulkhead steering bearing housing is on the engine side of the bulkhead. My S3 has the housing in the footwell with a metal clip visible on the engine side.

Can someone confirm which way around the housing/bearing/clip should be?

Thanks in advance

Ralph,

That had me scratching my head too , but I can confirm that my bearing housing is also in the footwell. The metal washer that holds the plastic sleeve in the bearing (on the engine side of the bulkhead) is from a Sierra steering column, and is about 30p from a Ford Dealer.

Unfortunately, when I changed my bearing I didn't really realise the importance of this washer and just stuck the old rusty one back on in a casual fashion. That one then broke and, although I've now put a brand new one on, I think the sleeve isn't seated snugly in the bearing any more, which means that the steering's gone a bit loose again. I think it's going to have to be out with the steering column again to get it sorted!

The housing on my V8S is in the footwell with the metal clip in the engine bay. As far as I recall this wasn't the case when I had my S1 though - as I had to replace the older nylon type with the later version - this involved drilling extra holes through the bulkhead to accomodate the fixings for the later design.

I replaced the whole bearing & housing on my S2 as it was like steering with a stick in jelly. The bearing & casing were inside the footwell.

I bought the whole unit from TMS for about £20
