TYPES OF ALARM

Ok time for another silly question, the previous owner, god bless him, lost the radio fob for the alarm and instead of replacing it, cut the leads into the black box under the bonnet, the details on the alarm are too vague to make out and I do not know even if I have an alarm or alarm and immobiliser!!(I think the vendor saw me coming)

Now, what type of security would people suggest:

Alarm or alarm & immobiliser etc

How awkward are they for an expert to fit, I am too chicken to venture into the murky world of TVR electrics!! and are there any particular types that any of you would recommend.

as an aside should I have an alarm on my 1.5? was it a standard option??

No.

I phoned TVR when when my S3 alarm was playing up and they said that the S series did not have a factory fit alarm and that any alarm would be a dealer or alarm co fit.

META alarms seem quite good, if you get an insurance approved one you may get a bit off your policy. I think they use them on the modern cars.

I Have a Laserline 996 Alarm immobiliser,which was fitted my S3 when i brought it(3yrs ago), it also has ultrasonic interior sensor with the microwave option(4 softops).
I have had no trouble what so ever with it.
ITS cat 1 so insurance companies love it Cost around 375 for alarm/imob, just the imob 130(cat
2) but there are plently others out there that im sure are just as good at cheaper prices

I'd have thought your best bet was to ask who ever services your car to recommend an alarm expert. I'd be suprised if someone who has been fitting/repairing these things wouldn't be able to recognsie a model by looking at it even if the labels and print have come off.

I can confirm, having read the bible & manual that the alarms were a dealer fit and came therefore, from many varied companies. Mine has a Cobra Alarm with supposed Microwave sensor, it works quite well.

The original car order form states Alarm as an ordered fitted extra, hence it was a dealer option. Alot of the choices are down to personal choice.

My S1 has a COBRA alarm which works very well.
If I set it while the car is in the garage with the top down the alarm will go off if the garage door is opened.
Trouble is I dont have any instructions for it and so it can be a bit hit and miss knowing how many times to press the sender to lock the doors/immobilise and arm.
If it has been set off ,it can take about 5/6 signals from the sender to reengage the immobiliser whereas it normally only wants a couple of clicks.
If anyone has any ideas of the correct sequences or some to try I would be grateful.

I have a similiar f reg 1.5. The previous owner fitted an alarm /immob called toad. The key ring has a hob which deactivates the immob when in ignition. No buttons no nothing! I have the certificate of installation confirming thatcham cat 2 which the insurance co. wanted to see. They were happy with that. If you want to know more, get in touch

Laserline, Cobra or Vecta are quite good alarm companies in my experience.

A decent fitter will have no problems fitting an alarm to your car, and with all these things, you get what you pay for. They can come in at sub £100 for an immob only, and £1000 for a really really good alarm.

I would suggest a Cat 1 for your own benefit with microwave so you can leave the hood off and protect the car.
