Haynes Motor Museum - monthly meet. 1st Sun of Month
Discussion
Did anyone go this month?
TBH I haven't been since Covid - last attended in Feb 2020 - just weeks before the first lockdown.
I do rather think the new regime - pre booked tickets (only) - and charging a fiver - is against the ethos of breakfast type meets.
Because the USP, to my mind, was the informal nature of Haynes BC - and the long lamented (Bristol) Avenue Drivers Club -
See what the weather is, have I had a drink the night before(?), pop down for a morning or just an hour, call in on the way somewhere....
I don't fancy pre-booking only to have to drop out due to weather etc but might give it ago come the summer...... but of course then the event will be sold out knowing my luck!
Obviously I appreciate Haynes are a business and must make a profit to recover their costs of organising (which must be quite substantial) "our" HBC but the pre-booking - loosing the spontaneity that was the attraction - will hopefully end should we ever really enjoy the sunny uplands of a post-Covid world.

Fully agreed; it's a pleasant drive for me but I'm not willing to commit in advance.Because the USP, to my mind, was the informal nature of Haynes BC - and the long lamented (Bristol) Avenue Drivers Club -

As to February’s meet, I thought it was very well attended given the initial rain and blustery conditions. Some nice old French stuff on show in the paddock as well as a good mix of other motors in the main parking area.

It’s only £5 and given the investment they made during COVID to improve the parking and facilities I think this is a small price to pay, even you decide not to go.

They're a charity and I'm happy to support them, it's a great facility - and a fiver is pretty fair IMO, even though this time I booked and chickened out due to the weather....As to February’s meet, I thought it was very well attended given the initial rain and blustery conditions. Drove down from Southampton for yesterdays meet. Apart from being bloody freezing it was a good morning.
A fiver is nothing these days, compared to the cost of fuel to get there and fuel when there (madatory bacon butty & coffee).
We were overtaken several tmes on the way down. The Skunk can go faster, but not with my wife on board and not when it's that bloody cold. Another 5mph and we'd have had to have been frozeb to the seats when we arrived!
Anyone got any photos?

The queue looked like a joke today! :O
Why, oh why, did they have 8+ marshalls to steer you in, guide you to park, check your ticket multiple times... only to have one person scanning the digital tickets in the booth? Also, why issue a further paper ticket once you have had your email / barcode scanned?Aside from the entry woes, I enjoyed the morning and the metal on show! Check out my friend BH Photography on Faceache or Instasham for some lovely pics of the event btw.
Looks like the Haynes breakfast club is starting to create a bit of a divide, (well looking at the various social media arguments) it's great that it's got such a following now - but that seems to be at the price of variety.
Combined with the need to pre-pay it's putting off people who might have turned up on a whim if the weather is nice.
What are other peoples thoughts?

I'd been a long time attendee of the Avenue Driver's Club (Queen Square, Bristol) but that was 'taken' over by the Facebook crowd, resulting in bad behaviour (selfish parking, revving & racing). So I was pleased to hear of the Haynes' Breakfast Club and I've been attending since the very first one. I even started this thread back in 2015....Combined with the need to pre-pay it's putting off people who might have turned up on a whim if the weather is nice.

But......
Seemingly, as the event grew it started to attract the 'wrong' crowd. Too many 'moderns' for my taste. Not enough variety.
Just before Covid, Haynes seemed to address this issue by having two meets - 'Old' and 'Modern'.
Covid stopped that.
Personally, my interest is in eclectic vehicles - I don't want to see dozens of 'the same' cars.
And, I can't be bothered planning and booking weeks in advance: I liked waking up of a Sunday morning, looking at the weather and just going.
I can appreciate Haynes looking for a revenue stream but a fiver and a forty-five minute queue..... Not for me.
For those of us with an Italian car disposition, the Italian Auto Moto Club are holding an Italian car (and bike?) festival in Devizes on Sat 16 July.
There will be about 60 spaces but they hope it will grow next year.

Check out South West Classic car club. Open to everyone and everything and definitely meets your eclectic want. 2 quid to get and it's only across the water in Chepstow or Nr Exeter.https://www.facebook.com/groups/643089849788221
It's a private group, but just ask to join they'll let anyone in ! (They even let me in )

I've been a couple of times since they started to charge, the nail in the coffin for me was the lack of a full english! That was the best part about the meet a good breakfast and a lot of cars. I'd rather go to a local meet for free and have a coffee than drive an hour of the A303 pay £5 and have a bacon bap. Other companies have started to pop up offering cars and coffee or evening meats with food etc that are looking a lot more attractive, especially for themed gatherings.
