Rule 1.
Watch the traffic wardens, they even booked a coach driver a few weeks ago for letting 45 primary school children off his coach to go to the swimming baths....
( they wrote the ticket out as they were getting off the coach, this even made headlines in the "Bury times"..) Rule 2.
Be careful of the scallies/scrotes..
These are easily identified as they wear shell suit pants, smoke a joint and wear a lightweight white baseball cap with pale blue stripe either side, and can be spotted at the post office on a Thursday drawing out their 500 pounds a week unemployment benefit....
Rule 3.
Don't go anywhere near the "Dicky bird" estate, (this is half a mile away from Fairfield Hospital on Rochdale road........
Rule 4.
Don't go near any pub within 2 miles of the town centre unless with want a pint pot over your head....
Other than that, it's not a bad place....
Famous Bury names from the past include Robert Peel, founder of the modern police force, Richmael Crompton, author of the "Just William" books, singer Peter Skellern, Victoria Wood, footballers Gary and Phil Neville etc, (and their dad who is called , would you believe Neville Neville and holds the Bury beer supping record).........

It's a rough council estate off Rochdale road, all the names of the roads are named after birds such as Chaffinch drive, Swallow road, Robin lane etc, if there's any crime in the town thats's usually the first place the BiB look...
There were two murders on the estate last year....

There has been alot of development work at Fairfield to accomodate the services transferred from the now defunct Bury General.
IIRC correctly, there is a big car park on rough tarmac opposite the main building. Turn into the entrance from the main road, go straight ahead and turn right. At busy periods, it can be tricky to get a space even though it is a large area with no spaces marked. However, last time I was there it was free of charge for all users - something becoming increasingly rare at hospitals.
On the whole, Bury is a pleasant enough area to work in and if I can generalise, the staff at Fairfield have always been great. Its a very friendly place and I think you'll enjoy it. Of course, it is now part of this new super trust that includes North Manchester General, Oldham and Rochdale. It should be good experience for anyone in medical training.

I'm in Bury, sunny Prestwich(which is just inside the Bury border and we all tend to see ourselves as Mancunians)
I would say watch Bury Council, they are pretty useless and a lot of their departments are about 6 months behind in processing paperwork. Yet their stats show them to be the most improved council in Britain!
I think you get the idea, very slimy group of people.
Town centre is Chav central, but there are plenty of decent shops around and it's reasonalbly well connected to the motorways. There seem to be a lot of TVR owners about as well so can't be all bad(someone up the road from me owns a BRG Chim, are you on here?).

Was talking to someone about Prestwich today. She thinks it might be easier for me to park there and get the metro link to Salford. I'm really not well up on the area at all so wouldn't have a clue what times/prices/distances are!
It might be a good idea, but it comes down to how early you need to be there. I have to be in Salford Quays for 8:00 and I just about make it if I leave at 7:00. I would give it a go in the car and on the Met, and see which one you prefer.

Like any city in Great Britain, there are good areas and bad areas and, as such, you use a bit of common sense and keep your wits about you at night. Bury is no different.
I live in South Manchester which is considered a better place to live by some and IMHO, but it's not necessarily any safer, just less poor, better quality nightlife......
....and most importantly, it's where we have our meets at The Romper pub near Manchester Airport (see other threads in this section).
You're more than welcome to come along - I could pick you up in my Chimaera 450 - any excuse for a longer and more interesting drive to the pub than 5 miles on a motorway! What's more you will see your fantasy car there (T350)!
Note to Gavin - I've promised her she'll see it, so you'll have to come now!
