Hi Lois, I live not far from Bury and have worked at Fairfield Hospital and still go there for the odd clinical meeting.

Bury itself is like any other smallish northern town, reasonable shops, town centre full of chavs etc...

Motorway access is pretty good, although at the moment roadworks on the M66 are a pain in the arse, plus gatsos enforcing a 50mph limit. I would from experience say that driving to Salford on the whole would probably be a better solution than the Metro (I used to commute to Hope Hospital when I worked there which is in Salford).

Fairfield itself is a nice place to work and I have had a couple of friends who have worked on maternity there and really enjoyed it.

I hope you enjoy your placement there, I will keep an eye out for any Fiestas with Pistonheads stickers in the car park.

I live in South Manchester which is considered a better place to live by some and IMHO, but it's not necessarily any safer, just less poor, better quality nightlife......

.... and they put lemonade in their beer .

chim450 - I wanted Hope Hospital as it would have been easier to live away but it wasn't to be!

Any idea what the uniforms are like there????!

Think I will have to get a PH sticker now!

I went to Salford Uni and travelled from Bolton - used to leave home at 8:10 and get there about 8:50. Mainly went down the A666 & A6 as the M/way/A580/A6 route took an extra hour!

I guess from Preston, M61/A580/A6 is the easiest route, if not the fastest!

TBH, I didn't like Hope much. I was doing neurosurgery there at the time. Very impersonal place, hell for parking.

Yes, I believe they have a rather fetching low cut crop top combined with a micro skirt and stilletoes.

god couldn't imagine doing a 12 hour shift in stilletoes, let alone trying to deliver a baby in a mini skirt!!

No sticker as yet as it would have gone in my mums car...not my own! Will get into the case!

Wouldn't they take the mini-skirt off when you went into labour?

hi don't post on here very often, but can help on this one - my house backs onto the hospital.

preston to bury is really easy - just come over the tops - M65 - grane road (brilliantly twisty) - or the M66 straight into bury the hospital is 2 minutes off the motorway.

lots of hospital staff use the residental streets off rochdale old road for parking during the day. it doesn't cause any fuss as the people who live here are at work.

new hall road is a good one to park in - a good mix of old people who like to keeep an eye out on their street during the day and i'd say a very safe place to park.

good luck with the job.

Thanks.
Hopefully will be called for occupational health and uniform measuring soon.
