Moved to York - Help Needed!

Hi all,
Mrs G and I have just (3 weeks ago) moved into a rental in York and are about to start house hunting.
We need to start working out what are the nicer areas to check out so thought I'd ask here.
Ideally we'd like to be within 5 miles but could go further out as long as we have easy public/taxi transport into the city for evenings. No commuting to take into account or schools required.
Looking at a village if possible with pub and shop and looking at 3 beds with garden. Max price around £650,000.
We've seen a house online in Acomb that looks interesting - what's that area like?

Thanks David,Renting in Hungate so I'm literally a 2 minute walk to the Shambles. After living in the middle of nowhere for the last 3 and a half years, living in York is like being a child in the candy store. I love it here!

Acomb has some nice and some not so nice areas. We lived there for 14 years in 2 different houses and it was fine. We moved to Strensall 2 years ago to be in the catchment of better schools. We like it here.
Bishopthorpe has a good primary school and is in Fulford secondary catchment so popular with familys and the house prices reflect that.
Heworth and Holgate are 'in town' so quite different to every where else you've put. On the whole Heworth is nicer but there are some lovely houses in Holgate.
The A19 to the south can be a pain so the house in either Escrick and Riccall would have to be good for me to be tempted. Having said that you do get more for your money down there.
Every where you put has nice areas, so you'll be fine. Just beware the ring road around Clifton Moor as its also bad, so worth bearing in mind when looking at Haxby and Wigginton. Do also Have a look at Upper Poppleton as it is lovely.

I live in Dunnington, and despite being York centre born and bred, absolutely love it. Only things I miss is variety of drinking holes and cinema within walking distance. But with young kids, not missing it too much at the moment. Moved here primarily for catchment.
Fancied Fulford/Heslington, but saw amount of traffic/students and looked s little further afield.
Really like the look and feel of Bishopthorpe. Sadly, on the day we viewed a house, the smell of sewage was on the wind and we realised how near we were, as the crow flies, from the sewage treatment place near Naburn.
Outlaws live in Haxby, which is nice with its own shops and frequent buses. Straightforward route into town too. Strensall has a nice core, and is bigger than you think. Nice roads on the doorstep.
Having moved away from and then returned, I’ve been surprised how snarled up places in York can get.

If it's the modern new build then its too near the busy road for me. The double decker busses will look straight in. The Acomb house is on The Green - no idea about that area. To be honest, something less on show will be our aim. We’ve got no time pressures.

Indeed, welcome to York.
One piece of advice might be to check the flooding potential very carefully and specifically. Some places appear Idyllic, but are potentially exposed, possibly including areas of Fulford (I woke up to 3ft of water in my back garden), Bishopthorpe (friend avoided flooding, but the storm drains were backflowing), some parts of Naburn, plus others. Again, not all areas of each location, but we do seem to have a short memory of the impact.
In my view, some of the ring-road areas, like Earswick Chase, offer the best of both world in terms of easy access to the City, out of town shopping and main road routes, but also a rural feel (and mains gas!).
Definitely a good place to live, improving all the time. Some excellent restaurants and has always had great bars & pubs (in the early days of the internet, I printed a list of 380 pubs in York and over a period of time, attempted to have a pint in each of them. I cannot remember whether I managed it or not).

I'm in Copmanthorpe and have been for a couple of years now, we moved from the Wetherby side of Leeds, it is not the most attractive village but it is a bit of a gem in that it is on all the decent bus routes into town, short drive, cycle to the P&R, lots going on in the community, pub is reasonable as is the curry house.. Bish is nice but it is a bit of a drive through so not for me. I wouldn't want to live in Acomb, not with £600k to spend.

We moved from London 15 years ago, lived in town for 5 years, then to Heworth, nice area, more family orientated than Bishy Road (Bishy Road seems to have a good mix of families and couples etc), 15 min walk to town etc. Downsides were with it being a terrace (albeit a large one), the lack of outdoor space and often not being able to park outside park outside our house (especially when you’ve started to trade the cars up to something nice).
Having kids ourselves now, we’ve now moved out to Appleton Roebuck/ Bolton Percy for both the above, quiet and no shop, but both but have pubs (BP has a great cricket club too), only 7 miles / 15 mins drive into York (through Bishopthorpe), great countryside walks, and as someone else above said, can be on A64 in 3-4 mins so Leeds for work is a doddle.
York is fantastic place to live, can’t imagine going anywhere else now.

£650k will get you a nice house anywhere in York, the North side of the city has the Vanguard shopping centre and the new community Stadium, with lots of eating places etc.
As was mentioned earlier, Earswick Chase has some lovely houses, and handy for the outer ringroad/A64, although nearest shops/pubs are a mile away.
.....or why not spend £150k on a house in a rough area of York, and have half a mill left over to buy a few supercars
