NC500 (north coast road)
Discussion
Just back from a week’s NC500. Done in a ‘99 Boxster and really wouldn’t like to do it in anything wider especially if you go off piste eg what the locals call the Wee Mad Road from Achiltibuie to Lochinvar then the B869 north of Locinvar to Kylescu. Both stunning but very twisty and single track.

That "roller coaster" will be the A817, 10 minutes from where I live
It is a corker!
- It has an interesting background. When it was first built it wasn't a public A road - https://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/index.php?titl...It is a corker!
A mate lived over the far side of the MOD section, and we drove that road flat out every time. It took some getting used to following him past police cars at 100mph+. "It's fine, they don't care." he assured me. Being MOD police, they had no interest in speeders, especially ones in local (familiar) cars. Haven't been over there for years, so don't know if you can still get away with that sort of sillyness, but what a road!

Is that what this wee bothy on the Northern Access Road to Coulport was for? - https://goo.gl/maps/gUujvVXKgPTwSKwH7
Whatever its function it has a somewhat neglected appearance. I wonder why it's still there.

It's still there for a once every year occasion whereby that part of the road between the Whistlefield hill roundabout and Coulport is closed for one day (often New Year's Day).
That validates the MoD's ownership of the road and the ability, if ever needed, to close that road, probably without the need to apply for a council order.
