Have I heard this right?
Overfuelling can cause the pots getting washed out of oil and cause excessive wear on the bores? among other things?

Yep. The 520 is an extreme case and deliberately overfuels to stop pre-detonation and requires a complete oil change every test/track day to maintain the protection which degrades as the fuel concentration goes up.

Leaning the engine can lead to pinking/pre-detonation which can also wreck the engine far quicker. Don't even go there

Bangs are caused by the ECU failing to cut the fuelling fast enough when the throttle is lifted so that unburnt fuel gets passed out with the exhaust gases where it ignites on contact with the exhaust.

Yhanks guys. My car is pinking at the moment once the engine is warmed up although its better when running on Optimax but still pinks slightly. I tried to adjust the timing but couldn't even access the nut holding the distributor thanks to the power steering setup.

I don't think my car is overfuelling anyway any ideas on how to identify the cause of the pinking?

1. Strip the engine down as it might need a decoke! or

2. Take it to rolling road and get Mark Adams to see what is wrong. Pinking problems can be caused by all sorts of issues including variations on the engine build. Or even incorrect timing marks!
