Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, London Road (A329) between Bracknell and Ascot is to undergo modifications, and I know you'll all be pleased to hear they are replacing the roundabout at the Mercedes garage with...TRAFFIC LIGHTS! That will be a God-send, I'm sure rolleyes. the link at the bottom shows a map.

Bracknell Forest Council says:
"The next phase of improvements to our road network is about to get underway on the A329 London Road between Martins Heron and Ascot.
The £3.8m council and government-funded scheme is designed to manage an expected increase in vehicle numbers on this busy corridor as the borough grows over the next decade and beyond.

The first phase of the improvement scheme begins on Monday, 10 April, with the widening of London Road east of its junction with Fernbank Road. To help keep traffic disruption to a minimum, particularly at peak times, off-peak lane closures will be used whenever possible.

During this phase of the scheme, work to improve the entrance and exit to Licensed Victuallers School will also take place and is due to begin on Monday, 26 June. Once complete, this work will prevent slow-moving traffic entering and exiting the school from affecting overall traffic flow on this key road. Through traffic in both directions will be maintained at all times during this part of this phase of the scheme.

While everything is being done to minimise disruption, unfortunately there will be some impact on traffic flows at certain times during this phase of the scheme, which is scheduled to be finished by September 2017.

The second phase of the improvements will begin in January 2018. This includes the upgrade of the signals at both the Priory Road and Fernbank Road junctions with London Road to incorporate the most modern traffic signals. Also, the existing Martins Heron roundabout will be replaced with a signalised crossroads junction so traffic can be managed much more efficiently, in a similar way to the works on the Coral Reef junction completed last year.

the replacement of the roundabout at the Coral Reef has made it better. The "Mercedes Benz" roundabout they now want to replace with lights is a huge traffic problem, mostly because people enter the roundabout too fast meaning that it can be dangerous at rush hour to pull out onto it. And it's terrible for pedestrians. So I'm all for these changes as that road is just too busy now.

Agreed, the Coral reef lights have improved things but the left hand lane should be made a "turn left" lane. The three lanes into two arrangement between the Coral Reef and Sainsburys lights is dumb.

To be fair I haven't had to use the Coral Reef junction much for a year or so, but when I have it is after 21.00 and I just sit looking at a red light and no traffic so for me the change is a retrograde step!

In the decade I have lived in BFBC I have never seen anyone enter the "Mercedes Benz" roundabout too fast - but I've been stuck behind loads of people who seem afraid to try to enter it (maybe I've been stuck behind the Duke). laugh

As for pedestrians, I may have seen 20 in a decade of using that roundabout!

If the Duke doesn't like how busy the South East is, maybe he should relocate to Kidderminster!

Don't be a bell end.

Heading west on the road is the fast traffic. If you are trying to go North you get stuck because the cars enter fast so cars don't get much time to pull out. If you are going south you get held up because of cars blocking the roundabout.

Also, cars coming from the south often do a right turn in the left lane, further compounding the problem.

Pedestrian traffic is most busy early with people walking to the train station. Sure it isn't Oxford Street but the lack of safe crossing on the roundabout is a problem. Yes, I know there is a traffic light further west.

The roundabout is a problem, just because you don't use it at busy times doesn't mean it isn't so.
