rear brakes have died and need replacing! now do i go for mk2 rear calipers or upgrade with a bit of work to mk3 rear calipers as these dont stick like the mk2's do (apparently!)

The Big Boys Toys catalogue that turned up with my Golf+ this morning lists a rear caliper conversion fro Golf 2/3 to new Golf 4 anti-seize capipers. But it's a slightly eyewatering £200!

However, a trip to a scrap yard might throw up some Mk4 calipers.

Not unless you change the hubs, and in any case you don't really need bigger discs or calipers at the rear.

but my rears are knackered so thought if gonna get new ones may as well get bigger and better ones or would mk4's be a bit ott as all the weights gonna be at the front and a mk2 fairly light anyway!

You *really* don't want to shift the brake bias rearwards. Mk III or Mk IV calipers (not sure what you'd need to fabricate to fit the Mk IVs) with standard MkII discs will be fine I reckon unless you're putting some really beefy brakes up front. If you overbrake the rear you'll be getting rather too familiar with a hedge pretty soon.
