If you're checking for a binding rear brake... not that I consider that would cause your tyre wear, but... be aware of the (crap) design of the handbrake set-up, where the outer cables are in fact too short and, on full droop, physically pull the whole caliper in towards the centre of the car, applying pressure to the discs via the outer pads! It's not a problem on the road, but if you're checking it out with dangling suspension, you may think you're on to something when you're not. A jack under the rear damper to somewhat compress the suspension will confirm this phenomenon.
