Honda Del Sol brake problem

My son encountered a problem with his CRX Del Sol today.

Went to apply the brakes and there was nothing there, he managed to pull over using the hand brake etc.

On inspection I found that the brake fluid resoviour was fine and that he had not lost any fluid and there are no leaks. The brakes now appear to be fine.

Obviously he feels the car is unsafe until he can source the reason can anyone assist in solving the problem, where to start etc?
