I'm working out the details of a brake upgrade to my car. I intend to use MGF brake discs because they're the right size and PCD. To cut down on machining costs, I intend to reuse the existing bolt holes in the disc, although they are substantially larger than the studs on the hub, which thread into the standard discs which sit on the back of the hub. I'm going to get a sort of locking collar made up, essentially a very thick washer with some collars on it with the outside diameter equal to the bolt hole on the disc, but with a threaded hole in the centre of the collars to take the studs on the hub.

But having a think about it, I realise that unless the collars are exactly the same size as the holes in the disc there will be an element of play in the disc which would be very bad. Having never done the brakes on a car where the disc is held at the front of the hub with wheel studs and that little screw, I'm not really certain how it works. I assume the wheel bolts have a non-threaded shank at the top of them which is a tiny bit under the diameter of the hole, but if anybody has looked at this before, would they know how much smaller the bolt is than the hole?

Interesting. I've completely forgotten what the rest of that paragraph was about. It can't be important, it's only about brakes. biggrin

What about taking some nuts that fit on the studs and have 'em turned down to the diameter of the disc holes so you can screw them on the studs so they take up the difference in diameter?

I need to have something to clamp the disc to the hub as the disc goes on the back of the hub rather than the front on this car. so effectively I'll be looking at a big steel ring with four turned down nuts welded to it. What I need to figure out though is how much smaller than the hole the nuts should be turned down so that they fit but the disc doesn't wobble around.
