When there is under 1/3rd tank of petrol in my car, it can jerk violently when trying to accelerate (e.g away from traffic lights or trying to perform an overtake), as if it stalled. The car then feels lumpen and not keen to rev throughout the rest of the journey. It was only serviced about 2 months ago and I don’t recall it doing that before the service. I dont think it’s anything to do with the clutch for this reason as well as the fact that the jerking can also occur when the clutch is fully disengaged.

I tried to see if I could resolve the problem by filling it up with better petrol (Shell) and it appears to have reduced the amount of ocassions it happens, but has not eradicated the problem.

Any ideas?

Is there lots of crap in the tank do you think? Have you considered Redex and a long drive?

Wild guesses, since you haven't even said what car it is, but something fuel-related sounds plausible. How old is the fuel pump? Sounds a bit like my 550i did in the early stages of the HPFP saga.

No idea how old the fuel pump is. I’m guessing it’s the original

Me and my mech were talking about it a while back said if the pump itself runs dry it can run up and overheat. Do this many times and pump becomes knackered
