Alaska?
The US has no national equivalent to the UK's MoT, it's left to the States to decide if they want 'annual safety checks' on vehicles. The result is obvious if you watch the "Just Rolled In" channel on YouTube! Rotted out chassis/body shells, brakes with no discs, brakes with no brakes, cars with no floors!
Alaska has no annual safety check requirement at all!
John
I suspect it's probably quite similar to where I live in BC, Canada - your vehicle SHOULD be road safe, but there's no mandatory annual inspection, it's just up to the owner to stay on top of things. The police can pull people over and issue a vehicle inspection order if something looks particularly shady, but they rarely bother. As a result there are some seriously unsafe vehicles on the roads here. The US has no national equivalent to the UK's MoT, it's left to the States to decide if they want 'annual safety checks' on vehicles. Definitely worth checking out.
YouTube adverts have forced me onto TikTok.
Autopartscity is a great channel worth checking out, showing all manner of cars being brought into a scrap yard in Illinois - some broken for parts, some 'saved' and sold off, and others being crushed.
I think they are in NY state and get some utter rot boxes and he does the rust kick!YouTube adverts have forced me onto TikTok.

If watching Vice Grip Garage has taught me one thing, it is that most of those older Yanks will start, run and drive even after decades in the weeds, given little more than fresh fuel and battery, maybe new plugs and a tap or two on the carb.
Stopping them again may be a whole other issue!!
Mr Vice grip is a legend. Stopping them again may be a whole other issue!!

A friend qualified for a company car in about 1986. He was offered the choice of a high-spec Sierra (2.3 V6 Ghia), nice Cavalier (CD, from memory), an Audi 80 1.6GL or a 316 with no wheel trims and no radio. The numpty went for the BMW, because it was a BMW. His mate chose the Sierra and didn't regret it for a minute, laughing every time he parked next to the Austerity Limited Edition BMW in the car par park.A few more, this time from the LA outskirts:
I got excited because I thought it was a Nomad on the drive but it was ‘only’ a ‘55 station wagon and a ‘32 Ford or some such thing. I won’t post a photo as it has the house in the image but it was a clear indicator of the street collection’s owner.

You would think there would be some local bylaws to prevent that situation.
Why is everyone such a square these days? Live and let live. If I resided there, I'd just be happy that there were some cool cars to look at in the street*. A bit of decay never hurt anybody and is a sobering - grounding even - reminder that all will turn to dust; embrace the Zen, where that's concerned. There are far worse things one can encounter in a neighbourhood. - there actually are a few clapped-out motors round my gaff (and one in the drive!), but nothing as aesthetically pleasing as what's in the LA road.
