The bumpers do look awful but if you’re in the US and all cars of a certain age have them I guess you just get used to them to the point of not even noticing.
This Merc actually got off pretty lightly compared to the horrors afflicted on the Lamborghini Countach and Maserati Khamsin.
A lot of US owners Europeanise their cars by retrofitting the proper parts. This Merc actually got off pretty lightly compared to the horrors afflicted on the Lamborghini Countach and Maserati Khamsin.

If that was mine I'd be checking very closely for scratches after cyclists had been that close to it
Really?

Yup. There were 676 finishers in that bike race last weekend, and all but a tiny handful of local riders either drove themselves there in a car or van, or were driven there by someone they shared those cars/vans with. At least two of those riders were PHers too. If you have an evidence based point that you are able to debate eloquently, please feel free to make it. Or are you going to be too busy claiming that there's a "war" being waged on UK motorists, or that "The Cyclists" are a tribe of genetically different folk who all meet up on a Friday evening to plan their next campaign against "The Motorists"? Because here's a clue. Most of us who ride bikes for sport or pleasure are also drivers. and a tidy percentage of motorists who do not ride bicycles at all also care not a jot about cars and driving as passions. They are the "ones" you need to worry about scratching or denting "nice" cars in car parks, not bicycle riders who are also car owners/lovers/drivers...

ETA:
Have one of me, close to speechless (I dropped an f-word on camera too, oops!) when I got caught on video taking a photo of a proper classic...
...ffwd to around 5:50.
