Prewar Italian and French sports/racing cars (at least those with two seats) were often RHD because it was supposed to be advantageous as most circuit races were run "clockwise".
One of the most successful race cars of the period was the Bugatti Tipo 35 in its various versions. All were RHD (and had the gearlever outside the car, on the right).
There's a theory that much of the continent drives on the right because Napoleon Bonaparte was left-handed and mandated the convention in the countries he conquered. I don't believe there is any documentary evidence of this though.
Gratuitous photo of my Dad racing his (modified) 35 at Charterhall in September 1957.

Owned (and restored) by my boss' old neighbour, enjoying the fruits of a lifetime selling nuts and bolts (in large quantities). There's an 'Atlantique' in the far background, too, because you can never have too many old cars.

What is the little coupe at the far end of the front row - Abarth ? OSCA ?
As for the car lined up directly behind it - no idea !
.and one from the family album.
Circa 1970 en route to Agde in S. France. The trusty Minx, four up, boot crammed and roof rack stacked, not forgetting an Enterprise dinghy in tow. The decision to lighten things by not carrying a spare wheel for the boat trailer was to prove unwise...
Never in the field of internal combustion has 60 BHP worked so hard.

..but it was worth the effort :
