Signalling and Lane Assist

It looks as though the arguments about signalling or not are now being trumped by cars fitted with "lane assist". If you don't signal to change lane, the car will try to push you back into lane. It's a very unpleasant feeling the first time it happens to you, particularly if you weren't aware that the car is so fitted. It happened to me recently with a rental car picked up late at an airport. Wibbly wobbly, I actually wondered if it had a flat tyre ....

Male, seventy years old and not a nerd. I don't think the manual had an index entry for; Faults - steering pulls randomly to the left at certain speeds. He thought of the obvious stuff like tyres, brakes and suspension issues, but it didn't occur to him that his base spec car would have a system that pulls the steering wheel around for no obvious reason.I'm waiting for him to say his car slammed the brakes on by itself next
Lane assist function absolutely has good intentions and has probably saved lives in certain circumstances, but its application effectively forces the driver to act like a learner on his driving test at all times.
This is the Advanced Driving section so we all know(or should know) that signalling to change lanes is not always necessary.
The technology operates in the most logical method and I cannot think of any other way that would please everybody all of the time. I believe a sharp turn of the wheel without indicating will not activate the system, but who wants to drive like that.
I have had 2 cars fitted with lane assist, and I turned both off right away.
My next car(if I complete the sale) also has it, and that will get turned off also.
What I would hate is a lane assist system that cannot be turned off.

I understand what you're saying but surely unless you've been living under a rock, and especially as a car enthusiast, none of these features should really come as a surprise? The first time it happens, you'd just go "hmm, this lane-assist/start stop is a tiny bit annoying, I'll turn it off in the menus when I stop next"I'm not sure what's to "get started" on, really? It's not like either feature is an enormous inconvenience? You're just being melodramatic.
