Possibly on the wrong forum but: the other day, on a dual carriageway, I passed what was obviously the learner driver driving a fully marked 'professional' driving school car and I was surprised to see that the driver was wearing his 'hoody', with it pulled up over his head.

It was one of these loose fitting hoods such that if the wearer turns his/her head, the hood stays still and the wearer effectively looks onto the hood. Do driving instructors allow this, what can the driver see if he/she carries out a shoulder check? Can you pass the test wearing a hoody in that way? Or is it 'human rights'?

It is not illegal to drive with a hoody on.... but I would agree best practice dictates that one would not pass a test with limited ability to judge the peripheral boundaries of vision + shoulder checks.

But, from what I have experienced from driving tutors, I am not surprised. A lot of the tutors I see teaching are unfit to do so with what I have witnessed.

If during a test an examiner is unable to assess a candidate's observations due to an item of apparel or other personal accessory, then they can ask the candidate to remove or adjust said object.

Generally it wouldn't be needed, it is surprisingly easy to assess observations, both directly and from a student's reaction to other road users, but if it were problematic, then they would ask for the hood to be lowered.

When I see a ‘school car’ with just the instructor in it, there seems a wide range of competencies.

How do you know it's the instructor driving? I was tailgated down the motorway the other day by a car displaying the roof box & logo of an independent driving school. Can't remember the name exactly but was along the lines of 'Beryl's School of Motoring'. When it finally passed I don't think the fat bloke driving was Beryl wink

There are many different standards of driving instructors....just as there are many different standards of folk in any profession.

I wouldn't let any pupil of mine wear his hoody up if it had the slightest chance of impairing his vision.....or i thought it might

in all fairness.....most pups can't and refuse to look further than the wiper blades anyway smile

Ok, if I ever see him/her again I'll give you a shout. You call him/her Beryl to his/her face and let's see how long you remain on your feet punchlaugh
