My sister's V40 is using a lot of oil (relatively) and I have seen talk of these engines having issues related to, well, not sure what. Had a quick look on here but couldn't see a thread on it, so can anyone shed any light on the cause and fix?

My v60 D4 was the same. As long as you keep topping up never seemed to have any issues. But ive never had a car like it for oil consumption

Some of the 2.0d VEA engine (D4 Euro 6 engine) do have issues drinking oil - if you look at the volvo forums there are pages and pages of information about it. I think it's basically a strip down to fix it or just top up with oil.

I've got the same engine and so far so good - at 65mpg on the motorway i'd bite the bullet and top up with oil if my car does the same.

Thanks, I did look on Volvo forums but there's so much about oil leaks/consumption etc that I couldn't work out what was what. I think she can just keep topping it up.

What is it that causes this?

Thanks, too small drain holes in the piston rings. Nothing about fixing it, looks like you just need to keep an eye on the oil levels and it'll be fine.
