I've not personally experienced any issues, or read in either of the PH threads about the Trophy battery. Do it!

Thanks - have you got the manual or EDC? I'd be coming from a BMW M2 (DCT) , I'm leaning towards the manual as I want the full old-school hot hatch experience!

I've not seen any issues with the batteries either and all I seem to do these days is small trips to the shops and back - hence only done 1100 miles since July.

Got the EDC - great car, one of my faves in fact. The exhaust is brilliant if you like that sort of thing too.

Very much so. Watched plenty of YouTube reviews and the sound for a 4-cylinder is awesome. How have they managed to keep the noise with a PPF? No other manufacturers seem to be able to match it.

I'm looking at a 2019 Trophy, but I've read a few horror stories about the lithium batteries (DESS?) completely draining and immobilising the car. Is this a real thing to be concerned about or just a few isolated cases? The car would be in daily use, but quite a few short journeys of 3 miles mixed in with a few longer runs - about 8k a year in total.

Thanks
We have had 2 Trophys and yes, we have had issues where the cars have been sat for a while (7 days maybe) where they have gone flat.

Daily use is no issue.

Happened to ours too, quite a few times as it was rarely used (circa mid 20's to the gallon gets boring very quickly, no matter how fun the car is!) after having it 6m. Strange thing is you could start it, move it out of the way, turn it off to come back to it to move it again in a few minutes and bam, the battery is dead! When in regular use there were no issues.

Batteries aren't cheap either, can't remember the price but I do remember exclaiming "fking hell" when I found out the cost.

£600, I read on one of the Renault forums eek

Sounds like the issues arise when lightly used. Hopefully as a daily it will cope OK.

Going back to the exhaust comments, does anyone know if the Trophy has always had a Petrol Particle Filter, or if it gained one at some point further down the line? It's suddenly crossed my mind that the lovely sounding ones on YouTube could be earlier cars. The one I'm looking at is a June 2019 registration. Obviously seeing and driving it for myself would be the ideal way to find out, but we live in strange times!

No idea about PPF but mines a 20 reg and sounds great. Wouldn't want it any noisier to be honest.

The energy used for that last start simply depleted what was left in it perhaps?

Maybe but there was no hint of struggling to start like one would expect, then 2nd time, dead except for the bloody alarm!

Yes, £600 is about right.

Ours was a May registered EDC and it is shown as having a Particulate Filter on the spec page. You can always send me the reg and I'll check it.

I've got manual. I've never owned an auto, rarely driven any type of auto. Last time was when I test drove the M140, which I failed to find any sense of satisfaction in. Old-school hot hatch experience definitely sounds about right for the Trophy, it's just quite a lot bigger than the 205 I used to own!

Fully agree on the M140i, I tried an M240i and it was a massive disappointment.

I was slightly put off the manual Trophy by some of the reviews saying the box was crap to use. The car I'm looking at is a manual though. Hopefully it is still there post-lockdown, as I'm not prepared to make a commitment without trying it out. Haven't even driven a Megane since the mk2!

A 205, now you're talking. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era.

The gear change has loosened up considerably compared to when new, though I would say its still not one to be overly rushed. Its never impeded my sense of fulfilment stirring the cogs though driving
I 'bought' without even seeing another on the road let alone test driving, the RS reputation sells itself!

100% agreed on the manual. Below about 1.5-2k miles it really didn’t feel very nice - notchy and sometimes reluctant to let go of gears. I’m still only at about 3.5k miles but it’s loosened up nicely now. Not the best box I’ve ever used but pretty good and with a chance it’ll get slicker over time given the miles. I’m certainly happy with the manual.

Thanks, that's good to know. The one I'm looking at has done 5,000 miles so should be nice and run in.

The problem I'm facing is, if this one sells before I get a chance to go see it, there aren't many out there. Only 6 manual Trophys for sale in the whole country on Autotrader right now.

Regarding the battery, I have had a warranty replacement after around 12 months and about 5.5k miles it was used daily. On another forum I am on from memory there has been something in the region of 30-40 warranty replacements which must be around 5-10% of all trophy cars. My car since battery replacement in june has been fine and that's despite much reduced mileage. The battery was noticeably having issues after around 4-5 months after buying from new which it's not doing now. I believe the battery is a shade over £600 but with vat on top and there isn't any alternative than using the Renault part. Non trophys have a standard battery so no issue. There is a software update that has been released off the back of the issues that reduces battery usage once out of the car.

I believe also to date more manuals have been registered than auto's going by data on how many left site, obviously going forwards that will change.

Not sure. They've obviously played about with it and tweaked it. I think other manufacturers just bunged the filters on, hoped people wouldn't notice and just accept that they're now a bit quieter.

Hyundai seems to have done the same with the i30N. Apparently, it's literally only a couple of decibels quieter than the non-GPF equipped cars, so next to no difference.

That's good to know, and bodes well for future cars if the system can allow that kind of sound if developed from the ground up with a GPF (at least until the death of the ICE)

I'm a bit torn now as I've seen a couple of images of the interior of the facelift Megane and the infotainment is a massive step up in quality and graphics, but they have removed the manual option...
