Well, after watching this year's race, I won't be watching or betting anymore on the Grand National. It's the 21st century, and our treatment of animals sometimes is medieval. To those that enjoy it, then fair play, but it's not for me. That grey horse at the end that won was being pushed way beyond its limits IMHO.
Mate these animals are bred to race. They get fed the best food, groomed, exercised everyday and have the best veterinary care. It is always sad when a horse dies in a race, but the majority do not. They even keep on running and jumping without their riders. They are loved by most of the stable hands and most have a pretty good life.

It's pretty much that - bred to do a particular job. Disposable assets, shall we say.

I guess the basic principle is the same as military or Police dogs, (in the sense of being disposable) but with utility replaced by sporting gratification/financial gain.
