The PH Gun Cabinet - Shooting Matters
Discussion
Are there any members in the east Midlands (I'm between Derby and Notts) interested in a free Lanber 12g O/U?
My SGC is up for renewal in the new year and I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't opened the cabinet in almost two years so I shan't be renewing.
Ideal for a young shooter starting out in the sport.
Hope this is ok admin.

What a great offer. A Lanber Gold Deluxe was my first 12 shotgun when I started out and it fits me so well and is such a capable gun it’s still with me 14 years later. Shame you’re not continuing, but lovely to see you’re offering the chance for someone to take it up and push on.

"spike of shame" - love it!
We had our awards ceremony last week and one of the dogs won "best uni-directional extended retrieve"
AKA - fail.
And my mate Neil won the trophy for "services to the cartridge industry"
The spike is a bit of a back up. My young springer is doing really well so far. He sits on peg without lead. Let's out a few whines/squeaks but other guns can't hear him. Has been steady when I've dropped birds fairly close and sat nicely whilst I've picked them myself. Now have the confidence to walk up birds with him which is the holy grail as far as I'm concerned and acquitted himself well doing that. Steady to flush and shot and retrieving some really good birds. We had our awards ceremony last week and one of the dogs won "best uni-directional extended retrieve"

Chris, if it’s a case of a space to store it whilst you sell it. I’m Newark on Trent way but have family in Eastwood and Langley mill. You’re more than welcome to store it in my safe under my license if that helps. Unfortunately I’m a lefty and require quite left handed cantered stocks so have no use for it.
Offers there if it helps.
Happy boy, I have just made my first batch of caseless ammo for my 1858 Remington.
I have made the usual paper cartridges but this is my first attempt at the Hazard compressed powder cartridge. They didn't go entirely to plan but I am reasonably happy. I just need to dip the bullet in the lube and give them a go which, unfortunately, will have to wait to next week. I can't wait! I also have the templates to make period cartridge packets so if I find time this week I may have a go at that too.

Only just found this thread.
Pre kids shot twice a week, now 3-4 times a year. Scary how many decent little shoots have closed.
Any advice where there is a decent clay shoot within 45mins drive from West London and reasonable cost per clay?
Are there any PH shoot gatherings?
Cheers

And yes, we have a monthly PH shoot at a variety of grounds through the year.
We have just completed our first year, and have a great mix of abilities, and we done take things to seriously .
There is a PH monthly shoot separate thread, but nothing planed until Feb for next year so far.

45 mins drive from Ealing pretty much limits to Bisley Pay n Play (need insurance though) and realistically more like 50-60mins from Ealing, West London SG at Northolt (closest) and EJ Churchill at High Wycombe (45 mins)
There is Holland & Holland as well in Ruislip, but not cheap.....

Will keep an eye out for dates. Are these PH shoots usually close(ish) to London?

Shoot locations will be all around the UK, so pick the ones that suit you the most, but other than EJ Churchill if we do that again, there won't be many, if any within 45mins of Ealing I'm afraid, as Churchill is the only venue that close.
I'm afraid, if you are that time limited for travel, there are very few places to shoot clays within 45mins of Ealing, other than the ones mentioned in the posts above.

My usual shoots back in the day were
Sporting targets (next to WLSG)
AGL (Atkin Grant & Lang)
Hicknaham Farm Beaconsfeild (closed i think)
A1 Shooting ground (closed down)
Hillside Bulldock (closed down)
Valley View Little Missenden (closed down)
Shoot near Reigate next to the M25 but cant remember the name of it,
Only shot Bisley once. Was a nice ground and had Skeet.
EJs, H&H, WLSG shot a few times but rather expensive.

I'm afraid if you consider EJ and WSSG rather expensive then you won't be shooting anywhere, as they are you're only choice if 45mins is you travel limit.
AGL is nominally 45-50mins from Ealing, but given that requires using either the A406 and M1 or the M40 and M25, it could easily be 1hr 45mins these days!!
As for Bisley, there are two venues there remember, the skeet/trap venue inside the NRA main area, and the seperate Pay n Play sporting clay venue in Long Sibera, which is accessed before you get the the main gate for the NRA site. If you have BASC membership, then you are OK to use Pay n Play at Long Sib. Cost wise, its about the same as EJ's I'm afraid.
There is a private small club about 5mins from the M25/A3 junction in Surrey that shoots twice a month that would be a cheaper option (just) and would be just about 45mins in normal conditions from Ealing, but, with the current road works at J10 ongoing for another year or so, it would be well over an hour each way to get there until the road works are finished.
They shoot on the 1st and the 3rd Sunday morning of each month, website link below....you'd need to contact the club beforehand and not just turn up on-spec, as you'd have to shoot as a guest for first few times, and they'd need to make some arrangements.

I'd been looking for a small game/tarras type bag for walked up and smaller days when I'm shooting and working the dog.
I only need to fit my dog first aid kit, dog spares, cans, a box of shells, gloves, glasses and a waterproof most of them come up too big.
Emailed Phil at Ogden Shooting Supplies on Sunday asking if he could make a reduced size version of their regular tarras bag. He replied immediately and asked how I wanted it finished. It arrived yesterday.
The dog bits fit nicely in the pockets. My stuff fits in the main compartment and I can even attach my spike of shame to one of the brass rings and secure it with the flap instead of having it dangling off my gunship.
That looks great. I would 100% use that for driven shooting. Like you I have a dog first aid kit and other bits and bobs. But for walked up, I am not sure that would work well if you have a few birds to carry. Do you take a game bag too? I only need to fit my dog first aid kit, dog spares, cans, a box of shells, gloves, glasses and a waterproof most of them come up too big.

I usually use a cartridge belt for walked up and a game bag. Trying to travel as light as possible.

Goodness, times have changed. Gone are the days of 28-30p per clays im guessing..... Think last time i shot EJs it was around the 42p but maybe wrong.I'm afraid if you consider EJ and WSSG rather expensive then you won't be shooting anywhere, as they are you're only choice if 45mins is you travel limit.

Considering the lack of shoots and as i dont shoot that often would be happy to travel further afield. Perhaps 1.5 hours.
Thanks for the link for Pheonix.
