Nobody is suggesting that intentional cheating should be allowed, but if a guy makes a mistake having left a club in his bag, doesn't use it and possibly doesn't even know he's done it, it's a dick move to call penalty on him. I would be inclined to think you noticed long before you called penalty, but waited to achieve maximum advantage from it, given your apparent mindset and the joy it appears to give you recounting the story.
+1 - but that could be because I’m more of a ‘play golf to enjoy and have a fun time with people’’ sort of guy The game is about putting the ball in the hole, and breaking that rule didn't affect the way he or I were able to do that, so shouldn't dictate the result, IMO.

I don’t think the time have changed, what you’d describe with the guy kicking the ball, that’s outright cheating, no place for it in the game. But carrying an extra club that you weren’t aware of and/or didn’t use is hardly cause to penalise someone.
Granted you’re talking about playing at county level so I’m way below your level anyway, but none of my playing mates would cheat and if they nudge a ball or hit a pin they’d call they’re own penalty, there’s no reason to call people out for minor infractions if they don’t affect the game.
Unless you're losing Granted you’re talking about playing at county level so I’m way below your level anyway, but none of my playing mates would cheat and if they nudge a ball or hit a pin they’d call they’re own penalty, there’s no reason to call people out for minor infractions if they don’t affect the game.

This whole thing started with asking a question on the rules, purely because it seems to me that people today don't know them and don't care. A few years back I lost a hole because I was three inches from the hole and picked my ball up without asking if the putt was given. He had the right. I didn't complain; I should observe the rules. But it is time to let it drop. In typical PH fashion what started out as an interesting question has led to abuse.

If I picked my ball up as described and lost the hole, I’d think that I was the twonk. If I lost because I got called out on having an extra club that I was unaware of, then I’d think differently.
It’s not about absolutes, it’s about knowing when to give a little.

With respect, I don't think anyone has been abusive. It's just that you told the story with yourself as the hero, but we didn't necessary agree with that interpretation of the situation.Picking your own ball up and being called out on it is perfectly reasonable. You can't gimme your own gimmes.
With regard to winning the match by strictly applying the rule on the number of clubs - that's perfectly legitimate, but given you're not on Tour, I'd personally suggest that was too pernickety an approach to an amateur hobby.
I wouldn't complain as such, as you'd have been 'right', but neither would I be rushing to put my name down next to yours for next month's medal, if that's the ratio of exactitude to reasonableness that I could expect to encounter while I'm 'at leisure'.
I put the scenario to my son who is low single figures and a fringe county player. He is also very competitive and a stickler for the rules - He stated he would offer to replay the match given the same comp (Club MP Championship) and same score at the time. Which I think is still OTT. But he is a "good" player and annoyingly has his name on a few of the comp boards in the club house!!
But I also don't agree - no one was or is being abusive - golf is about decency and gentlemanly behaviour. I am sure if you genuinely feel abused here we all apologise as it aint the intent!
Did you win the final BTW?

This was an atitude I picked up off my old man, who was a EGU Referee in his spare time - he thought it was important to know the rules but understood they were utterly baffling at times (have you see the size of the Decisions book that accompanies the rules?) and in.club golf tended to go by the spirit of the rules and intent - if someone was deliberately cheating he'd roast them. If they made an honest mistake, like forgetting to take their spare putter out of their bag, he was less bothered.

They’re here...
I think I might take them to bed with me tonight
I desperately, desperately wanted the blades, and nearly bought them, but they just felt too punishing on Mis-hits. I’m not sure the numbers were noticeably worse than the SC when I didn’t catch it right, but I couldn’t quite convince myself. The SC look almost identical...the top line is a hair thicker, but they’re much more of a players iron look and feel than the AP1s I’m used to. The MMC 5i blends in perfectly too.
They really are beautiful irons - whilst I didn't get on with them when I tried them, if I had the money I'd buy a set just to look at.I think I might take them to bed with me tonight

However when I tried them the place didn't have my preferred shaft (S400) so if I cam find somewhere that does I may take a look. Would have to be the Blades for me though, 3 - PW.
We had both a 2-club and a 3-club tournament. Only a putter was mandatory.
Scores were generally pretty good.
We also had a 4-hole tournament, where the course was divvied up into just 4 holes, so it was 1st tee to 5th green, 6th tee to 8th green, etc.
That one was a bit stupid. But great fun, and saved a lot of messing about with that horrid putting malarkey.

Yep, had the same at our golf club. Scores from some people were better than when they had a full bag to choose from.*Scores were generally pretty good.
