Festival of speed first timer 2024
Discussion
Our staff on the ground at Goodwood are saying a lot of the grassed areas (so all car parks and much of the grounds) are quite muddy and boggy in places. Don’t wear your new white trainers!
Forecast looks grim for Friday but only a bit of rain on Thursday and the weekend looks better.
Enjoy yourselves! It is a wonderful event, if a little bit too busy nowadays.
There are some real pinch points so keep a tight hold of small children. Pop an AirTag in their pockets if you have one, and take a photo of them when you arrive so you can remember exactly what they are wearing should the worst happen and they wander off.

I've been many times, and as a wheelchair user I'm always concerned about the conditions.
Would you be able to provide a couple of updates on the conditions? I'm due to go on Friday, but may well reconsider if it's too 'heavy going'.

The weather seems to change every few hours - BBC had it at heavy rain 60% risk earlier, but now light rain 30% risk.
Other apps show a lower risk. That seems fine so far as it's always so variable there.
We went last year on Friday and got a bit wet, but thankfully wasn't anything like the crazy cancellation on Saturday.
From Goodwood:
"Festival of Speed ground conditions
Due to recent wet weather, we strongly recommend all guests bring practical shoes for the car parks and the event site. Whilst every effort has been made to preserve and restore the car park fields in the lead-up to the event, some car parks and pathways are muddy so please bear with us as we direct all guests into and around the event as safely as possible. Please allow plenty of time for your journey."

Not great no, but.....with my 'glass half full' head on.
It's dry and breezy today.
Tomorrow is looking very pleasant and another good drying day.
The forecast for Friday is better (some dry spells between the rain showing now) than it has been.
Saturday and Sunday are both looking pretty good.

Thanks for these updates - this isn't exactly looking god for wheelchairs is it. *sigh*
Car Park A was pretty muddy. Drive onto the site and there’s thick liquid mud on the roadways.Weather brightened up in the afternoon and the cleaning Lorrie’s did their stuff. Had to drop colleagues back at the car park and it had drued up a lot. Any more rain and it won’t be great…
There is a huge amount of heavy traffic on site on Wednesday which won’t be there on the public days, so the metal tracks should be a bit better from now on

I suppose it hangs on how the car parks and pathways bear up after the Thursday public, so I'll keep an eye on this thread.
I've been 15+ times, so well aware of the variable weather and conditions, but after so long I'm trying to balance the misery factor of slogging through mud, compared with the rewards
Does look quite muddy - Hopefully the setup trucks haven't screwed the ground too much although the pictures don't look great. I suspect the main punter car parks won't be too bad to start with as they won't have been used much but will quickly go bad if it's too wet.
We are due on Friday which is the worst day so will be interesting to see what it's like. Certainly doesn't look like it's a day for sun cream this year.

Most of the main thoroughfares on-site wither have metal tracking of copious amounts of wood chip so tend to be ok-ish.
I think that things will be fine tomorrow...and if the forecast breezy, sunny day comes to be, everything will be in good shape by late afternoon.
Friday is the big worry.....

I wonder what it's like once you're in? Is it going to be slushy walking about?
I haven't been since COVID so not sure if they have improved but always pack wellies if you can. Even with forecast decent weather. Watching people slip and slide walking up the hill whilst you cruise in your wellies is ultimate smugness. As is exiting the venue in some sort of 4wd rally homologation special.
2016 was the best with cars just abandoned on the field whereas next year I got sunburnt. Such is British weather.
