I agree - I felt sorry for the people who could hear the cars, but not see them properly (and many seemed a bit bemused as to what to do).
For the money, they ought to put a slightly raised platform behind the bales. Much easier said than done of course, but this isn't a cheap event to go to and be disappointed.

It was suggested to me that the increased height is in response to BUY1 (the Jaguar) losing a wheel into the crowd last year although I hardly see that an extra few inches of straw is going to offer a meaningful solution and elevating spectators would just put them more in harm's way. Next thing you know it'll be 4 metre high catch fencing.......
At one point I was walking up the hill and there was a group of people that had gathered a collection of metal bins together, and were standing on them, one had a camera tripod set up on it, I didn't see if anyone from Goodwood got them off as I didn't come back down that way, there were plenty of people stood on wooden chairs too, way more than in previous years.

..
I did notice a couple of people standing on what looked like portable platforms later in the day, as well as others standing on whatever random objects were around. It’s not great.

Thought I'd add my feedback as a first timer all the way from Aberdeen (1200 mile round trip)
We went on Friday, took my car loving 11 year year old.
We got there for 6:45am, was dreading the traffic, we queued for 15/20 minutes which I felt was perfectly acceptable.
We went straight to the paddocks for a good look around, very quiet at that time. Really enjoyed that.
Then we headed to the Red Bull area to view the F1 cars. That was highlight of the day by far. Getting so close to the cars and the teams starting them up and revving them, wow! Proper goose pimples. My son was give a headset by a Red Bull mechanic to protect his ears and could hear them talking, revs, oil temperature, coolant temp etc. Made his year I think, that and meeting Matt Armstrong and a F1 car doing a donut right in front of us.
For the rest of the morning we wandered about taking in the rest of the paddocks and manufacturers stands as well as watching cars going up the hill.
After a very bland £9 burger, we walked round the reseller stalls which was good, then back to watch cars going up the hill.
Like others have said, it got uncomfortably busy between 11:30am and 1:30pm. Didn't enjoy that. My partner got nervous walking over the bridge with the pure volume of people on it.
Only thing we didn't get to was the rally stage or the turning circle at the top of the hill climb. Oh or the Future Lab. It's impossible to do everything, you really do need to plan and prioritise your day.
Negatives, well Red Arrows display was slightly disappointing, they were rarely in view. Far too many electric cars. Just not interested in watching a car silently woosh by no matter how fast. It's all about the noise. Wish I went 10 years ago.
As for Grandstand tickets, would we have benefited? Can't remember how much they were, but yeah perhaps. Certainly wouldn't have been so tired from standing all day and my son would of had a better view. I assume you can use any grandstand? We were on the go all the time, nice to be able to move around.
Would I go again? Possibly in another 5 years time, just worried it'll then be 50% electric.
We left the event just after 4pm, we were all shattered from being up at 5am and walking miles. Drove straight out, no queues at all. Very very well organised. Only queues were navigating Chichester bypass which took 40+ mins or so.
Fantastic event and experience, would highly recommend to anyone who has never been, huge bucket list trip. With that said, I don't think it's something I would go to regularly, even if more local.

Was pleased to see the plate on the hill climb too!

I don't understand - I thought Grant Williams' Jag has had that plate it's entire life?
BUY 1, BUY 12, OWN 1 etc were all Coombs demo. plates. Coombs was taken over by Vines and the plates remain in Vines ownership. Afraid I don’t know if the William’s Jag. is one that used to wear BUY 1 in period. Gassing Station | Goodwood Events | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
